Chapter 1
JENNIFER'S POV
"Jen Winters and Jordan Adams, please see me after class." Miss Joy, our Algebra teacher said, as she set her books on the table. Ironic name huh?
"Am I in trouble?" I asked.
"You? No! Of course not!" She said, as she started to write on the blackboard.
"Am I in trouble?" Jordan asked.
"You? Yes! Always, in fact!" She replied, as I smirked. I grabbed my notebook from my bag and started copying notes. In the middle of a sentence, someone kicked my seat, making me flinch and mess my notes up.
"What now?!" I hissed at Jordan.
"Move your big head out of the way." He said, stretching his neck, pretending to be listening to the teacher.
"Please, like you really listen during discussions." I rolled my eyes as I pushed his foot off the chair.
"Asshole." He muttered.
"Same to you." I replied, continuing on my notes. We were almost through with Algebra, the subject I hate the most. I still do my best though, because after this is dismissal. A knock came from the door, catching our attention.
"Miss Joy, they need you in the faculty room." Our Physics teacher said.
"Class, I expect you to be quiet while I'm gone." She said, before exiting and closing the door. In an instant, everyone brought their gadgets out, playing music and singing along. Some were sleeping or flirting or making out in a corner.
"Hey Jen! Wanna hang out later?" Dillon asked. He's the school jock, everyone liked him. Not me. He's a total man-slut. Is that a word?
"Err I can't. I need to do something later." I said, still taking notes.
"Do what? Me?" He asked. See? Man-slut!
"No! Homework and other stuff..." I said, disgusted.
"We never go out anymore." He groaned, leaning on my table.
"I'm not really looking for a relationship right now." I said.
"Why not?" He asked.
"I'm busy." I replied nonchalantly, hoping he would just go away or evaporate.
"You're always busy." He said, slightly lifting my skirt.
"Don't." I said sternly, swatting his hand away and fixing my skirt. "Look, those girls over there? Go flirt with them." I said, referring to the group of girls who were drooling at him.
"Maybe I will." He huffed, leaving me alone.
"That was very entertaining." Jordan said, clapping slowly.
"Shut up!" I glanced at my watch.
"Teacher's coming!" Someone said, as everyone scurried to their seats and hid their gadgets.
"You're dismissed." She said, adjusting her glasses. "Jordan and Jennifer, please stay." She added. I internally groaned. Once the classroom was empty, she cleared her throat.
"First of all, Mister Adams, I would like to talk to you about your grades." She started off.
"Should I be here?" I asked.
"Yes." Dammit!
"You're failing in all of your subjects, and you are going to be kicked out if you don't improve half of them." She said. He stayed silent, me just watching.
"That is why I am letting Miss Winters tutor you." She explained, as our eyes widened.
"Why me?!" I whined.
"Yeah, why her?!" Jordan exclaimed.
"You, Jennifer, have the highest grades in this class." She said.
"Why not another student?" Jordan asked.
"She is, so far, the most trustworthy and hardworking." She reasoned.
"How about a teacher?" He asked.
"Err... They all have someone else to tutor." She said.
"But---"
"No buts Jordan! You need these, or else you won't be getting your diploma. There's no way around it." She cut him off.
"What's in it for me?" I questioned.
"We will partially be decreasing the amount you pay for your tuition fees, as long as I see progress on his grades." She pointed at Jordan. I pondered this for a while.
"Okay." I muttered.
"Great! You start tomorrow." She said, as I quickly grabbed my bag and bolted out. Opening my locker, I grabbed my skateboard and some notebooks and slammed it shut. I skated down the road, since my house was only several blocks away. As I opened the door, I heard heavy footsteps running in my direction. I felt uneasy and hurried inside my house. I shut the door and peeked out the window. A shadow was visible on the pavement. It stood still, then turned around and disappeared. Who the hell was that!? Obviously not Jordan, why would he follow me anyways? I shrugged it off and went upstairs to my room. Thankfully, we didn't have much homework to do. Means I won't be staying up late doing Jordan's homework. But... I will still be going to his house tomorrow. Blegh. Silence occupied the house, as I studied my notes. I lived alone, as my parents were abroad, to work for my fees. It was not long until my phone buzzed, the screen blinking with a familiar face.
"Jen! Can I come over? There's nothing to do here!" My best friend, Tyler asked.
"Sure! I'm done studying anyways." I said.
"Okay. I'll bring ice cream! What flavor do you want?" He asked.
"Cookie dough!" I said.
"I knew you would say that." He chuckled. "I'll be there in ten!" He said, as he hung up. I walked downstairs and prepared some movies and chips.
- later -
"So, basically, I'll be tutoring him for the rest of the school year." I groaned, taking a scoop of my ice cream.
"Isn't he, like... emo?" He asked. I nodded, frowning.
"Well, good luck to you." He chuckled.
"Thanks. I'll need it." I said. I set my cup down and pulled my knees to my chest.
"Aw, I'm sure he's not that bad." He said, trying to comfort me, since he knows I hate Jordan.
"I'm not..."
