Flashback

You set the last box down on the floor with a hefty sigh. "Phew! Glad that's the last of them!" You wiped your brow, sitting on the floor by the boxes. You opened the one you had just set down and pulled out the first book you touched.

Basic Alchemy: What Every Alchemist Needs to Know the title read. You couldn't help the sad smile that crept across your face.

If it weren't for this book, you wouldn't have lost your Mother when your Father died.

You could see everything as clear as it had just happened ...

"Mom? What do you mean, 'Not coming back'? Didn't Father love us?" you asked, puzzled.

Mother bit her trembling lip, trying not to cry. "Y-your f-f-father loved us a l-l-lot, (y/n) ... B-b-b-but h-h-he ... he's d-d-d-d ... d-d-d ... d- ..." Mother broke off, sobbing.

You frowned. "What happened? Is Father ... dead?" You whispered the last word.

That only made Mother sob harder.

Later that same year Father died, your mother started introducing you to Alchemy. She gave you a book titled Basic Alchemy: What Every Alchemist Needs to Know and had you study it front to back. She was also working on her own Alchemy project, something she would never tell you until she was ready and thought you knew enough to assist her.

When the Human Transmutation failed, Mother slipped into a vegetable-like state. She wouldn't talk to you, she never ate ... she became a shell of the woman she once was. You tried everything to bring her back to the surface ... but nothing ever worked.

A week after she slipped into that shell, she took her own life. Her body was crumpled on the floor, a bloody kitchen knife nearby. Her eyes were glazed and unfocused, a faint smile on her lips. She had stabbed herself in the chest, then slit her own throat.

It wasn't until you lost both of your parents that you understood why Mother had performed the ultimate taboo. She was desperate to see her husband again, to be a normal mother ...
