"Hey Riley!" Farkle smiles as he puts his lunch tray on the table and sits next to me.

"Hey Sparkly Farkley!" I grin.

Be cool Riley, act natural. I try to tell myself as I take a bite of my salad. My stomach feels like it's tied in knots and filled with butterflies.

"I brought you a little snack that I happen to know you love!" Farkle exclaims.

"Yay!" I say, very excitedly. I love surprises! And I love that Farkle has a little surprise for me!

"Some gummy bears!" Farkle pulls out a pouch of gummy bears from his backpack.

"Gummy bears are my favorite things ev-" I am giddy until I look down at my salad, and remember that I'm supposed to be on a diet.

"Just one thing." I am about to look at the calories that the gummy bears have but Farkle kind of reads my mind and lightly swats my hand away.

"Riley, you're amazing the way you are, right now. I kind of noticed that checking calories has become a habit for you. Look, you're eating your salad and now you get to eat some of your favorite candy. And it made you really happy for a second!" Farkle says all of this while his gorgeous deep brown eyes bore into me.

I can't help but look away. Farkle's right. He knows me too well.

Calorie count should not and will not ever take over your life! Do you hear me?! I am serious! I silently scold myself. I love you. I also say. It's nice to tell myself that.

"Thanks Farkley." I say, feeling my cheeks getting hot.

"No problem at all, Riles." He says back.

I open the pack of gummy bears and eat them Riley Style- you bite off the head first so that the gummy bear doesn't feel pain.

"You still do that?!" Farkle laughs.

"We may be high schoolers now but hey," I giggle, "I'm still in Rileytown and I care about how gummy bears feel!"

Farkle and I laugh but it doesn't last for very long because then we see a very scary, short, blonde, blue eyed monster stomping to our table.

Suddenly, Maya slams her tray on the table, her cheeks pink and her nostrils flaring. My best friend is angry.

"Woah woah woah," Farkle says, looking as alarmed as I am, "What happened?"

"I've just had enough of Ranger Rick." Maya says. She angrily takes a bite of chicken. Only Maya Hart could make 'eating angrily' a thing.

"What'd he do?" I ask.

I don't feel too concerned. I mean, my best friend can be a little dramatic sometimes. But on the other hand, this might be Maya and Lucas' first fight, so what could have happened that looks this bad? I just don't know.

"We were looking through my drawings in my sketch pad this morning," Maya explains, "And then he was like 'oh these are amazing' and I felt happy and all, but then he went on to say 'people with awful lives do tend to be very talented.'"

My mouth falls open.

"That's such a horrible thing to say!" Farkle exclaims.

"Yeah Maya, I'm so sorry. That's a backhanded compliment!" I say.

"Yeah, it's like he said I'm only talented because I've had an awful life. Maybe I'm just talented? Like what does my relationship with my parents have to do with it? That discredits my abilities and makes me feel like shit!" Maya rants.
