Older units were huddled together outside. Some of them were in workout clothes and others were in pajamas. When our unit walked up, we stayed in the back, but it wasn't hard to tell that everyone's eyes laid on Zaine.
"Where the hell is Maxwell?" Cheshire complained as soon as we got there.
"Yeah, we have a bet to settle," Andres commented.
"Relax," Cariba hissed at them. I looked over at Wib and he was looking around, nervously. Something was wrong.
'What's wrong?' I asked him.
'I have a feeling that wasn't Maxwell,' he said and then I clapped, eagerly.
"Yes! Exactly!" I yelled at him. Then everyone started looking. 'His voice looked differently.'
'Looked?' he asked. I nodded. 'We have no mind link.'
"What's going on?" Zaine frowned. Jane pushed through the crowd.
"What do you mean no mind link?" she asked. I frowned, wondering how she knew sign language. "I took sign language when I was back home. I'm fluent, alright."
Impressive.
Wib turned to her and started signing quickly.
"Well if you're no longer linked with him and you can't see his voice or whatever, that can only suggest that something happened to Professor Maxwell and it wasn't really him over the PA," Jane said. Yeah right. Everyone scoffed and called her crazy, basically.
"No one willing to hurt Maxwell is even on this island," Skye commented.
"And if they were, they wouldn't have a chance," Indica added. True...
"You're here because you're some super genius, but you come up with the stupidest idea—" Cheshire started to scold Jane, but then there was a surge up my spine and before I spun around, there was a shower of bullets that shot through some sort of glass.
The cafeteria. Everyone paused and faced the huge building, and moments later, little kids were running out. I looked over my shoulder and saw bullets being shot at the units gathered outside. My hearing advanced and there was a helicopter above us that instantly showered down syringes as if they were handfuls and handfuls of rice. Before they hit us, a pink shield blocked them. Some fell to the ground, but others bounced off the field and into the other teens, who dropped to the ground if they didn't defend themselves. There was screaming and running and panicking. When the helicopter flew away, Indica dropped the field and allowed everyone to grab each other. With all the noise, I was blinded by dancing colors.
"We gotta get out of here," Cariba said over everything.
"I'll lead the way," Zaine immediately said, cutting through our unit and starting to head towards campus.
"Zaine, there's nowhere on this island to go!" Indica reminded.
"Well if we stay here, we're good as dead," Cheshire said. Something flew at his head, but was turned into ribbon at a wave of his hand.
"Where do we go!?"
"We need to stay and fight."
"We'll die."
"We need a plan."
"Sentara's Unit!" a voice boomed over everything. All ten of us looked over to see Sentara running up to us. She called us over to an area of shrubbery and we all circled around her.
"What do we do?"
"Who are these people?"
"What—"
