JESS STARED AT the clock in front of her. The contractions were getting longer and more painful. She was cursing under her breath, wishing for Essie to burst out already. Lee had dropped her mom off as he said he would but instead of leaving, he had lingered behind and thus, he had come to stay. Jess moved on the bed, not finding a single position comfortable.

There was a knock and Lee walked in. He stood awkwardly by the door, almost hitting the top of the ceiling. Jess stared at him. "Why are you just standing there?"

"Guess who came over," he said, stepping aside. Jared moved inside the room, moving his hand slightly up.

"Hey, Jess."

"You are not going to faint, man," Jared told Lee. There was sweat rolling down Lee's forehead as he stood at the end of the delivery room. Jared was beside Jess, holding on to her hand. Her mom was to her right side, stroking her forehead.

"Holy shit," Lee muttered.

"Don't curse, Lee! I don't want the first thing Essie hears to be a curse word," Jess' mom shot Lee a look. Maybe it was that look, or the fact he could see the baby's head from where he stood and it looked so gross that Lee fell to the ground. And passed out.

One of the nurses rushed to help him as Jess gave one final push and Essie was born.
