{ 14 } triple fudge brownies

"Are you coming into the shop today?"

"No."

"Okay."

It's the same question for at least a week since Grandmère's funeral. Jasmin would come in, wake me up, sigh when I say no, and manage the shop for the day. I would just stay upstairs in my room and either sleep or watch TV. It took a couple of days to go through Grandmère's stuff. That's probably what made my lack of motivation to go into the shop worse. I mainly stayed upstairs, until I heard the fire alarm.

I rushed downstairs as I saw the large billow of smoke emerge from the kitchen. Customers started coughing and leaving. I ran into the kitchen and found Jasmin fanning the open oven door, spreading the smoke in every direction.

"Jasmin!" I coughed. I quickly pulled the fire extinguisher and spread the foamy substance everywhere. Pulling on an oven mitt, I gently pushed blubbering Jasmin out of the way and reached into the oven, pulling out the burned culprit.

"IranoutofbrowniesandIdidn'twanttowakeyouuporbotheryousoItriedmakinganotherbatchofbrowniesbutIfailedmiserablyandI'msososorryBon-"

Jasmin's words stuck together as I cleaned up the mess.

"I'llpayforanydamagesIjustwantedtohelpI'mtrulysorryBonnie-"

"Jasmin, it's okay! I shouldn't have gone AWOL on you like that."

I gave her a small smile from the sink but jumped when I heard a voice that wasn't hers.

"When you said you had no baking experience, I didn't think you would burn your first batch of brownies."

I turned to Luis standing in the kitchen in his Sugar Rush uniform with a paper box. He's literally showing up everywhere and it's getting ridiculous.

"Who let you back here?"

'Well if it wasn't you," He slightly nodded his head towards Jasmin and I could feel her shuffling and being called out.

"I was desperate! I asked him to bring a batch of brownies in case I messed up the batch I was attempting to make. You didn't deserve to lose any customers because of my inability to bake brownies!"

"That doesn't mean you can enlist his help!" I hissed. I finished cleaning the burnt pan in the sink and washed my hands.

"It also means I didn't have to help." I looked at Luis after he said this, trying to figure out what he was getting at. "But I did."

He sets the paper box down on the counter. He looks at me with a serious expression. We stared at each other for a few long seconds. Finally, he simply nodded and left. I almost wish he just smirked at me and made some sort of snarky remark. His quietness was unsettling.

I looked over to Jasmin who had a somber expression. I sighed.

"Next time, and hopefully there won't be a next time, just bother me until I come downstairs, okay?"

I took a brownie from the box and ate it before I started working on my own batch.
