We had told Natalie and Dave that Harry was taking me home, and we received a flash of confused looks. Harry raised his eyebrows in surprise to their reactions.
"What?" I say. Natalie just looks back down at her plate shrugging her shoulders as if her response was no big deal. Dave followed. I look to Harry to see if he had the same look of confusion as me. He furrowed his brows and flickered his eyes back in forth to cover any awkwardness. "Er.. Okay, well I'll see you back at the beach house..." I say awkwardly. Harry says his goodbyes, Nat getting up to give him a brief hug and thanking him for coming. Harry turns to me after releasing the hug.
"You ready to go?" He asks. I nod my head in response. He grabs his keys off the seat of the booth and leads me out of the resteraunt. We weave in and out between the crowd of people, until the salty breeze hits us as we step outside.
I inhale a deep breath as the warm air engulfs me, along with the distant sound of waves crashing onto the beach. It was no longer day, the moon acting as a night sun in the sky, the lights off the rides along the dock added color to the dark. Bells and whistles could be heard as groups of friends tried to win prizes at the arcade.
I look up to the tall boy beside me. He looked just as relaxed as I was, with a small smirk on his face as he listens to the cheers and laughs of others around him. The lights from the surrounding shops added a slight glow to his face, a small sparkle reflecting in his eyes. He really was handsome. I quickly looked back down to my feet when I realized how long I was looking at him.
"We can turn right here," he says to me.
He points to a parking lot in the distance, and starts walking in the appointed direction, me following closely behind.
Harry reaches down into his pocket and takes out his keys. The headlights of a Ford pick-up begin to flash as he presses the unlock button. The truck seemed more old than new, the paint chipping in some areas, and the bumper grazed with rust. "Is this your car?" I ask.
"No, this is Dave's. It's been sitting in his garage for a while, he fixed it up for me so I could use it for the summer," he says. I run my hand over the hood of the truck.
"I like it," I say with a small smirk.
"Really? I think it looks like a piece of shit," he says laughing. A small laugh escapes my lips as I open the passenger door and hop in.
Harry slides into the drivers seat, putting the keys into the ignition, and turning it in the slot. The engine gives a few stutters before it finally turns on.
I reach over my shoulder and grab my seatbelt, clicking it into place.
"So where do you live anyways?" He said smiling.
"Oh yeah," I say giggling, "It's on 52nd street, I'll point it out when we get close to it." He nods his head in agreement. A small silence fills the car, I reach over to my right and roll my window down, the warm rush of air blows my brown locks off my shoulders. Harry then reaches to the radio and turns on the local station. We stayed like that for a while, just relaxing and enjoying the ride down the long highway, until we reached the beach house. "So, how long are you planning on staying in America?" I ask.
"For the whole summer," he says happily, "I'm really excited about it too, Dave's been planning this for a while, I've been really looking forward to this for a long time." He says with a smile, his dimple becoming prominent.
"Yeah, you'll have a great time here, the beach is always the best," I say, my smile reflecting his. He looked at me and grinned then looked back on the road.
I was surprised at how much Harry has opened up since a few hours ago. Starting at not saying a word to easily carrying a conversation. He really was a nice guy. The more I talked to him the more open and and friendly he got. It was kind of cute actually, him being shy. Normally guys are the loud and obnoxious ones, so coming across somebody like him was nice for a change. "I think it's right up here," I say to him, pointing ahead. He switches lanes so he can turn into the upcoming neighborhood. He turns the steering wheel into a small development with a large variety of colored houses. "It's this blue one up here to the right," I say.
Harry pulls up to the curb along the driveway, putting the truck into park. I look at him and give a warm smile. "Thanks again for the ride tonight," I say quietly.
"It's no problem Bailey," he says. He unlocks the car doors. I unbuckle my seat belt and reach for the handle and open the door. I jump out onto the driveway and turn around so I could close the side. I put my elbows onto the ledge of the window, looking down at my feet, my shoes suddenly becoming very interesting.
"Well, I'll see you later," I say looking up,"goodnight."
"Goodnight," he replies. I slowly walk away, tapping the hood of his truck as I walk to the front porch of the house. When I reach the top of the steps, I put the key into the lock and open the door, then I turn around one last time and wave goodbye.
