Second day of school, what a bummer. He woke up before his characters, thank goodness, and was able to ride to school without any distractions. As soon as he got to his locker though, he was bombarded. “Well wouldja look at that?” Aunt Hilda muttered despicably. There was that perfect person, obliviously trying to unlock Shane's locker.
Shane mustered up as much courage as he could and walked towards the boy he had made a fool of himself in front of yesterday. “Excuse me,” he began. The boy looked up. “That's my locker.”
The boy looked confused then looked back down at his schedule sheet. He then slapped his forehead. “Oh my goodness, how embarrassing of me!” The boy showed Shane his schedule sheet. “I'm dyslexic, and I totally thought that that six was a nine! Ugh!” The boy giggled whilst Shane tried not to look too flustered. “I'm Joey.”
“I know,” Shane spoke without thinking. Joey raised an eyebrow at him in confusion. “Sorry, yeah. You were at Dr. Bronston's office yesterday.”
Joey's eyes widened. “Oh my gosh, you were that boy! You looked so concerned. Do you like her? Is she worth the money, cuz I don't want to pay for her to get nothing done with me.” The perfect person stopped and began to blush which made Shake almost vomit with adorableness. “I'm sorry; where are my manners? I never even asked your name!”
Shane took the excuse of opening his locker to look away, as he hadn't batted an eye in all the time that he'd seen Joey. “I'm Shane,” he said, shoving his books in his locker.
Joey smiled a perfect white smile that Shanaynay moaned at. “Hi, Shane! It's nice to meet you. Do you know where English with Mr. Fine is?” Shane glanced up. That's the same home room that Shane had.
“Sure,” Shane gave a small grin, “I'm in that class too.”
---
Shane hated English class. He already hated reading, so it was even worse to have to analyze the books too… not that he actually read them. Mr. Fine assigned the students to pair up and discuss the literary motifs of different chapters. Shane knew that being the weird kid meant that no one would want to be his partner. He'd probably end up stuck with the third wheel of one group of friends who couldn't find anyone else. He sat back and waited.
Much to his surprise, Joey turned around with a bright smile and began to work with him. “Hey, Shane! You want to be partners? You're the only one I know here.”
Shane blinked as Aunt Hilda laughed to his right. “Haha, as soon as he meets new people, your sorry ass will be kicked to the curb!”
Ignoring her, Shane smiled shyly. “I'd love to be your partner, but…” he looked down embarrassed, “I didn't actually read the book over the summer.”
Joey giggled and grabbed Shane's arm. “Don't worry. I didn't read it until the very end of the summer. It's all about a post apocalyptic civilization where different kids are pit against each other in a fight to the death in order to win food. I really loved it.”
“Cool,” Shane mumbled as Shanaynay exclaimed “Nerdy and hot; I'll have to get me some of that.” She was right though, he was practically perfect, “So why were you at Dr. Bronston's yesterday?” The question slipped without him thinking. Joey immediately froze in his spot, and Shane almost started hyperventilating. “Oh my god, I'm so sorry. That is way too personal. Please, don't answer that if you don't want to. No, I'm so stupid!”
“Way to go, fagatron, you screwed everything up,” Aunt Hilda mumbled, disappointed.
“Dayum, I ain't never seen someone mess up that badly!” Shanaynay exclaimed with a cackle.
“I believe you have, as the kids would call it, 'fucked up.'” That was Ned.
Shane shoved his hands in his face to try to stop the voices from appearing. “You're not real!” he shouted in his head over and over. Wait, but Joey was still there. Shane sat up again. “I'm so sorry, Joey.”
Joey looked confused but still managed to give a small smile. “No, it's okay. Don't worry. I can't say I'm not curious about you, but I'm totally not ready to tell anyone yet.”
Shane gave a distressed smile and nodded. “I completely understand. Maybe… later on in our friendship?”
“Ha! If there is a later!” Aunt Hilda cackled.
Joey smiled and almost whispered, “You want to be my friend?”
Shane blushed at his reaction. He had practically squealed. “Uh, yeah. I mean, it's not like I have that many to begin with…”
As soon as he finished his phrase, Joey pulled Shane into the biggest bear hug he had ever felt. “Oh, thank you so much, Shane! You don't know how much that means to me! People made fun of me a lot at my old school, so I was really hoping to have a fresh start here.” Shane smiled. He was weird too? He seemed so perfect though. Was Shane just making him up as well? No, the secretary at the therapist's office clearly said his name! He had to be real! “Shane? Did you hear me?”
Shane blinked. “Sorry, I kind of zoned out. What?”
“Mr. Fine wants our project done by next week. Can… I come over sometime, and we can work on it?” Joey looked apprehensive.
Shane thought he was absolutely adorable. Running a hand through his long hair, he smiled. “Of course. I'll give you my number after class, and you can text me when you want to hang out?”
"Sounds like a plan!" Joey winked and gave a thumbs-up. Shane almost shit himself.
