It was the weekend because the school was dumb and decided that it made sense to start school on a Thursday. Shane woke up to a phone call from an unknown number. "Hello?" Shane mumbled groggily into the phone.
The voice on the other end surprised him. "Hey, Shane! It's Joey. Did I wake you?"
Shane yawned audibly into the phone as a response. "It's okay; I needed to wake up anyway. Did you want to come over and work on the English project?"
Shane could almost feel Joey smiling through the phone. "Yes! I got this great idea last night at like midnight, and I really wanted to share it with you a-sap!"
The boy listening gave a chuckle. "Okay, I'll text you my address. When can you come over?"
"I have a car - Satsuki I call her -" his voice became a Southern drawl, "so whenever."
Shane smiled at the accent and sat up from the bed. "Cool, I'll get ready then."
"See you later, Shane!" Joey exclaimed before quickly hanging up the phone.

Joey stood pacing back and forth in his closet. What should he wear? Shane was his first friend at this new school, and he didn't want to seem dumb for not wearing the right thing. Oh! Where were his skinny jeans? "Joey!" a voice shouted, and he noticed he was nearly hyperventilating in his closet. Oops. He stood up and rubbed his shoulders to try to relax his quaking muscles. "Are you okay?" His sister Nicole asked in concern.
Joey shook his dizzy head. "Yeah, I just..." he blushed, embarrassed, "I can't figure out what to wear."
Nicole laughed softly. "Priorities, Joey. I just wanted to give you your laundry. Your skinny jeans are here."
Joey groaned, "Ugh, how do you know me so well?" to which Nicole laughed and kissed his cheek.
As she left she mumbled, "If I ever meet your new friend. I'm telling her this story."
"It's actually a boy!" Joey called after her. He could practically see her double take, but she didn't say anything. Joey didn't blame her for assuming his friends would be girls. They were the only ones that would hang out with him back in Boston. He'd be teased for having only girl friends and no girlfriends. Those dumb bullies caused his paranoia and anxiety in the first place.
Joey took a deep breath then changed into his jeans. Shane seemed different though. He was at the therapist's office, right? Surely he wouldn't make fun of him. Well, if he knew what was wrong he wouldn't, but the last thing Joey wanted was for someone to know. Joey combed through his hair once again and left the house. He hopped into Satsuki and set up his GPS. There was nothing to worry about. Shane and he were just working on a project, right? They weren't really friends yet...

"Mom, I'm having a friend over. Could you make us some snacks?" Shane called to Theresa.
Shane's brother Jerid laughed. "Really? A friend?" Shane sighed. He gets this crap from his voices enough, but his brother thinks it's funny to make fun of him too.
Shane glared, meanwhile his characters were laughing hysterically at his brother's sense of humor. "Jerid!" his mother scolded before looking back to Shane. "Sure, honey. What does this girl like?" His mother wasn't trying to hurt him, but his voices got a kick.
Aunt Hilda cackled menacingly, "Of course she'd think it was a girl. No guy out there would want to hang with a faggot like you."
Shanaynay was right on cue. "Yeah, this perfect little flower is only coming over to work on some dumb English project."
Shane shook his head before smiling at his mother's worried expression. "Actually, Mom, my friend is a boy. He's named Joey." His mother still looked concerned, but nodded. She always knew, ever since the diagnosis, when he was hearing them. What could she do though? They were in his head. She couldn't chastise them for hurting her son. Shane smiled before going back to his room to try to skim through his book.

I'm babysitting so I haven't had time to write as much as I would like to. I still have a few chapters written so I won't leave you hanging that long. It's about to get pretty cliffy though. I might actually leave you hanging for disappointment in an upcoming chapter, but you won't be disappointed for long. I'm singing lullaby renditions of my favourite songs.
