Ryan doesn't speak. He must not have wanted to tell me, it must have slipped out.

"How do you know them?!" I raise my voice and stare at him. Rage soon started to fill up inside of me. None of it all made sense. Ryan doesn't meet my eyes.

"Just tell me! I deserve to know!" I yell. I always wanted to meet my parents and ask them why they had abandoned me. If I ever forgave them, then I wanted to be with them forever, and I was soon feeling jealous that of all the people, Ryan knew them and not me.

"First calm down," he says. I roll my eyes and after a while I sit down.

"My parents were close friends with your parents," Ryan says looking down at his cereal bowl and occasionally at me. "I was 2 years old when you were born, almost 3. When you were born, everyone was so happy, including my parents. There's pictures of everyone together the day you were born. I can assure you that everyone in the pictures were happy, they were laughing smiling, and all crowded around you waiting a turn to hug you." A smile forms on Ryan's face. I bit back tears not wanting to cry. I wanted him to finish telling me and if I cried he would not tell me. Occasionally tears would slip out of my eyes and slowly fall down my cheeks. I bit my lip trying to contain the sobs that were forming already in the back of my throat.

"My mom told me that no one wanted to let you go, your mom didn't even want to share you, she wanted you all to herself. My mom told me I was a bit jealous that you were getting all the attention," Ryan says laughing. I smiled at his comment.

"I remember bits and pieces of the first few months you were with us. I remember wanting to carry you but no one would let me because they feared I might drop you. My mom would repeat to me to always protect you , that you were vulnerable and special. Everyday my mom would tell me that. I didn't know why back then but I guess now I know what she meant." Ryan says looking deeply into my eyes.

"Why did my parents leave me if they loved me?" I force myself to ask. Part of me didn't want to know the answer but the other part did. I feared to know that I wasn't what my parents expected at the end. I looked at Ryan and he didn't want to tell me.

"Please," I say and stare at him. He takes a deep breath not breaking eye contact with me.

"You really want to know?" He says. I hesitate but nodded afterwards. I needed to know.

"When your mom married your dad, she didn't know him quite well. They had only dated for 3 months and decided they were in love and soon married. They were a year into their marriage when your mother was finding things about your father. From what I was told, your mom was happily in love with your dad but there was a day when she didn't return back to her house. She had spent the night at my parents house. My mother learnt that your father had a history with alcohol and gambling. Your father couldn't control it and he and your mother would get into huge arguments. Your mother never divorced your father, she loved him and wanted to help him. Sometimes your father would make improvements and was able to control his drinking but there were days when your father wasn't able to control himself. Your father disappeared for a week. When he returned he looked like a homeless person living under a bridge. Your mother rushed over to him and demanded answers. All your father would repeat to her was 'I made a mistake,' over and over. Your mom related that the mistake he was talking about was leaving her and drinking uncontrolaby. 2 years later, your mother was pregnant of you. She was tired of your fathers ways, he never changed for the better and she didn't want you growing up with a father like him. She intended to leave your father but your father begged her not to leave him, that he loved her and you. Your mother gave him a chance but 6 months into her pregnancy, she left him. My parents took her in and promised to take care of her. No one heard from your father until the day you were born. He went to the hospital and everyone said he had changed, he looked healthier. Your mother didn't want your father near you but your father told your mom that he had changed for you, he wanted to be present in your life and if that meant he couldn't drink anymore, then he would give it up for you anyday. Your mother didn't trust him at first, but she didn't deny him to see you. Your mother soon saw the progress that your father was making in rehabilliting himself and they were soon back together. When you were 2 months old things got complicated. Your father was uneasy and wanted to leave the country and take his family with him. He told no one why, not even my father who he was really close too. It wasn't until your mother got it out of him. Your father, the week he had disappeared, he was gambling and drunk out of his mind. He said he knew he was about to win a lot of money, he was sure of it, and gambled even though he had no money left. When he lost, the guy who had won, asked your dad for all the money he owed him. Your father not having any asked for 6 months to collect the money and then he would pay him. But it was too much money and impossible for your dad to collect in 6 months. So the man offered an alternative. Which your dad at the time agreed." Ryan paused and left me in anticipation to know what it was. He looked at me with concern and didn't know whether to continue or not.

"What was it?" I ask.

"The man, wanted your dad's first girl."
