Matt's POV

I couldn't fall asleep that night. I was still trying to decide if I should go back to Misty Lagoon tomorrow. A thousand thoughts ran through my head and made it impossible to sleep.

I looked at the clock. 12:50. I was so tired, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't sleep. I got up, got out of bed and walked out the door.

It was really pretty at night in this town. The palm trees swayed and the stars in the sky gleamed. I could hear the ocean close by.

Going outside helped me clear my thoughts. I wanted to go down to the sea side, maybe take a walk, but it was too far.

I now knew what I was going to do. I knew, no matter how much I tried to deny it, that I really wanted to see Athena again.

I walked back inside, tiptoed upstairs, and fell into bed. As I pulled the covers up my eyelids grew heavy, and I drifted off into sleep.

The sound of the sea, the palm trees swaying, and seagulls cawing up above. It was amazing... almost hypnotizing....

I dug my feet into the sand, as the tide came in and slightly brushed against my feet. Then I heard a voice. A voice singing. My eyes darted to where it was coming from.

And there she was, in the water, singing to me. I walked closer.

"Come, come, and swim with me. I can show you the wonders of the ocean" her beautiful voice sang. I came closer and closer to her.

She smirked while singing then set her hand on my wrist. Then she stopped. I could suddenly see evil in her eyes.

She yanked my arm and pulled down into the water. Her sharp hands dug into my skin, hurting badly.

Everything was fading away... I couldn't hold my breath any longer.

Everything I saw went black. I could no longer see anything. My life was disappearing.... I was being drowned....

I sat up quickly, breathing heavily trying to catch my breath. It was just a nightmare....

But wait. Was that.... Athena who drowned me? It looked a lot like her in the dream.

I was definitely having second thoughts about going tomorrow to see her. What if she drowned me? I've heard stories like of mermaids drowning people.... But there looked scary, almost like aliens, nothing like Athena.

Should I be scared?

Athena's POV

I woke up from the sand I was peacefully sleeping on. I looked up and saw the sun shining through the water. Why was it doing that again?

Suddenly memories of yesterday flooded back, making me smile and squeal. I began to swim to the surface. Who knew when Matt would get here?

My head popped out of the water, making my hair stick to my shoulders. I searched for any sign of Matt on the beach.

And there he was, sitting peacefully on a rock.

I squealed, and ducked my head into the water and swam as fast as I could to him.

I eventually reached a spot in the water where the sand brushed against my stomach.

"Matt!" I called. He jumped a little.

"Oh... hi." He said. I was a little disappointed to find that he didn't sound as happy as I was.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." I said.

"You're fine." he said.

"So.... tell me more about humans! I've been dying to know more!"

"Um... ok. But first I have to ask you something."

Ask me something?

"Sure, anything." I replied.

"Well, I was just sorta... wondering if you... sing.. a lot?"

Why did he want to know that? Wait... had he heard the rumors.., about how we merpeople drown anyone who comes here? no no no no no no no no!!!! He had to know that I wasn't like that! I'd never drowned anyone in my life!

"Um... know not really." I said. Technically, that was a lie, because all mermaids sing. But I'd never sung above the surface, and I didn't want to scare him away.

"Oh... ok." He said. He seemed a little more relaxed after that.

We started talking. About human life, and about my life. I really hoped he liked me, because I was really starting to like him. But how could he ever have the same feelings for me? He was human and I was part fish!
