❝ Now the old king is dead! Long live the king! ❞
King Wael sat at the small table, staring into nothingness with an expression of both wretchedness and wrath. But his eyes, cold and metallic that rivals against the flawlessly polished suit of armour that stood in the corner of the room, were now filled with incredulity and uncertainty.
For the first time, he was at a complete loss to make a decision that wouldn't lead him to regrets. He was a man torn within himself.
For the first time, he started doubting his allegiants.
For the first time, he was questioning his actions and succeeding steps in his head as the seed of conscious started sprouting in his heart.
He had said goodbye to his love of his life as she had breathed her last breath before his very eyes, because of his actions.
The guilt still stings. Now, it does not weigh on his bosom but inside his brain. He knows what he had done could not be undone. Only in his silent prayers could he speak his heart and beseech for His mercy. He needed Him to bring his warmth, to show him that he can be better.
A nectar of sadness cascaded through his veins, numbing his mind as a poison devouring his spirit and wiping out the other emotions until it was the only thing that prevailed.
There was a war going on inside his head and outside the gates, and he's losing both badly.
"Checkmate!" His opponent Diomedes said, as the wooden king got knocked down, hitting the chess board with a dull thud, declaring King's defeat.
"Checkmate." The King repeated in surrender. For the first time, he lost.
"Sire? Are you alright?" Asked Diomedes."You seem lost in thought today."
King Wael opened his mouth to speak but before the words could tumble out, there was a loud bang and the castle shook violently, as if it was a great earthquake. A frantic looking knight barged into the hall and stuttered out, panting in between, punctuating each word with every gulping of air, "Your majesty, the kingdom is under attack!"
The castle quaked again, this time even more vigorously and accompanied by sounds of bricks and wood crashing.
"It won't take long for them to get through. Your majesty, you must leave now," The knight reported.
"No, I'm not abandoning my people!"
"If you don't take this chance, you're going to die and I can't let that happen," Diomedes said with a strange determination in his voice and eyes. Being King's companion, he had sworn to protect the royal family, no matter what the cost be, but it was an empty promise.
If only King Wael knew that his castle stood upon pillars of sand and salt, waiting for the wild wind to blow down the doors on him and crush him in pieces. If only he knew his allegiants were wearing a mask, hiding their true ugly self with a facade made of beautiful glittering lies.
The King's resolve began to falter and he reluctantly followed the knight down the narrow hall to the secret tunnel for escape.
