❝ You're fighting for your life inside a killer, thriller tonight ❞
On 31st of October, the late-Autumn wind pirouettes through the tall skeletal trees whose leaves are either loose on the ground or hanging by the threads, painting the suburbs in vibrant scarlets and golds. It was chilly even for the end of October, almost as if all the heat had been sucked into the terrain.
But thinking nothing of it, both adults and kids dressed up to trick or treat, rattling on excitedly as they promenaded down the sidewalk.
The streets were filled with vicious vampires cloaked in black with blood oozing fangs, gnawing moans and groping of ravenous zombies, staggering violent ghouls, cackling witches on broomsticks, and red devils with horns and pitchforks.
Halloween brings out the freaks and the wicked side of people in full force. This year was no different.
Front lawns became spooky graveyards, corpses and skeletons dangled from every tree branches, intricate cobwebs ranged over almost all door frames and sinister warnings written in dripping red paint festooned with lots of exclamation marks adorned each house entrances.
Carved jack-o'-lanterns lined the streets, glowing bright orange and yellow. Some looked to be shocked, some with toothy grin, others with the slimy orange mass of strings and seeds falling out of its opened mouth making it look like it was puking its insides out. As a matter of fact, no two pumpkins were alike.
A young man acting as a clown with typical white face, wild orange hair and red ball nose dashed by, brandishing a fake shotgun at her making her to flinch and curse under her breath. "So much for facing my fears."
Her eyes roved around the fair ground where families with their kids, mobs of teenagers and everyone else were streaming about and having fun. Her lips couldn't help but curl up into a smile as a seven-year-old skipped by her wearing the fake fangs like a pro, and being the cutest vampire she had ever seen.
She exhaled all the anxiety of the day in a single breath and felt appeased but it didn't last long. She gazed up at the eerie looking house in front of her that looked more or less like the Scooby Doo manor. Lights flashed from the windows and, frightened shrieks and cries resonated from inside.
"Woah, this looks awfully real for something run by high school kids," She gulped in a breath of air, her face plastered with nerves and her thin lips twisted into a frown. Even though her heart started to pound a little faster, she tried to keep her breaths in the same steady, slow rhythm and whispered to herself. "Get a grip on yourself, Kelsey. How bad can it be?"
The two-storied Haunted House was particularly a popular attraction in the fair, and Kelsey moved to the line that led inside, one feet at a time taking her time to the front door on the ramshackled porch. She could only imagine the horrors awaiting her and steal quick glances as the front door opened up to permit the next person inside, the blackness behind the door sending chills of terror down her spine. She hugged her arms around her chest in a vain effort to ward off both the chill of the night and her fright.
Eventually, it was her turn to head inside. The bald old man by the entrance held the door open for her and gave her an unpromising good luck with a thumbs up and a perpetual smile on his wizened face. Once inside the house she took small cautious steps as the door closed behind her and the light faded, and the unsettling darkness blanketed her.
