Chapter: 1
I came into town with a broken heart, broken spirit and a broke bank. I had once held such big hopes and dreams for my life and I had once believed that I would one day make it all a reality. That was until my world fell apart..
"Hey Rusty where is my apron?" I asked my boss who was in her office.
" In here on the back of the chair. Hey I need a huge favor." She said flashing the please don't say no pout.
" What now Rusty? Are you cuttin out early again to see JR and need me to close again? Or is there another ex boyfriend comin by that you need me to run off?" I huffed shaking my head.
" No it's not like that.. Tomorrow night we have a new country artist comin to perform his music and I'm expectin a big crowd. I need you to serve him and his crew in the party lounge. You know you are my best waitress and the most trustworthy. Please Shelby I'll even pay you overtime." She pouted knowing I'd say yes because she was the only one who would give me a break with a job when I came to town.
" OK Rusty but the first one of them that get touchy or handsy I'm gonna slap em upside the head just like I do the rest of these drunk assholes." I told her wrapping the apron strings around my waist to tie them in front.
" I knew I could count on you." She yelled from the office as I walked out and to the bar.
Our regulars were already coming in and our other night shift waitress was yet to show up. It was no surprise though seeing as how it was an every night thing.
" Hey there miss Shelby." An older man said taking a seat at the bar.
" Hi Mr. Lowell." I smiled at the man and poured his usual double shot of Jack sitting it in front of him...
The night was so slow that when Jen finally did show up for work Rusty sent her home. A slow night at a bar in downtown Nashville was very few due to the city's constant tourism so when we got one we enjoyed it.
" Pour me a damn beer Shelby." Rusty said sitting across from me at the bar.
" Gottcha Rust." I told her sliding her a mug of Samuel Adams.
" You are one hell of woman Shelby. I don't know what I'd do without cha and I hope like hell I won't have to find out." She smiled leaning back in the high backed swivel bar stool.
" You know I love ya Rusty." I laughed.
" Ah hell clock out and go home. I can handle it tonight I need you tomorrow night." She said slapping my ass as I came around the bar to wipe down a table.
" Na I'm fine Rust you know there ain't a damn thing for me to do at that house but be bored as hell, drink and think to much and we all know that ain't a good thing." I laughed and moved two stools back to their place.
" That's why I love you Shelby.. You are too much like me." Rusty laughed and walked Mr. Lowell out to his daughter who always came to get his drunk ass at the same time every night.
" So I take it that Cole is out of town tonight?" She asked when she walked back in.
" Yep he had a radio station in Chicago to do this mornin and a flight to take to New York for two more stations but he'll be home tomorrow night after I get off." I answered.
It sucked to have Cole gone so much but I was proud of him for making his dream of being a performer come true. It just seemed like he was losing interest in our relationship or maybe I was just overreacting due to the fact that I had been hurt before. I shook my head free of my thoughts and smiled at Rusty when she turned the radio on and "That's My Kinda Night" came on.
" Whoo! Hit it Shelby!" She yelled and I jumped up on the stage.
I was singing and dancing without a care in the world seeing as how we were alone closing up at 4:30 am. I danced around the tables wiping them down and collecting all the empty bottles, cups ect..
"" Might sit down on my diamond plate tailgate Put in my country ride hip-hop mixtape Little Conway, a little T-Pain, might just make it rain
You can hang your t-shirt on a limb Hit that bank and we can ease on in Soak us up a little moonlight You know I know what you like, yeah!
All them other boys wanna wind you up and take you downtown But you look like the kind that likes to take it way out Out where the corn rows grow, row, row my boat Floatin’ down the Flint River, catch us up a little catfish dinner gonna sound like a winner, when I lay you down and love you right Yeah, that’s my kind of night! Yeah, that’s my kind of night!
My kind or your kind is this kind of night We dance in the dark and your lips land on mine Oh oh oh oh oh, gonna get our love on Oh oh oh oh oh, time to get our buzz on
All them other boys wanna wind you up and take you downtown But you look like the kind that likes to take it way out Out where the corn rows grow, row, row my boat Floatin’ down the Flint River, catch us up a little catfish dinner gonna sound like a winner, when I lay you down and love you right Yeah, that’s my kind of night! Yeah, that’s my kind of night! That’s my kind of night! Yeah, that’s my kind of night! Come on...""
" Nice moves girl!" I tall brown haired man said catching me off guard.
" Umm, I'm sorry but we are closed." I told him trying to catch my breath.
" I know I'm here to see Rusty about my artist performing here tomorrow.. Well tonight I should say since it's almost 5:00 am." He said.
" Rusty you have business out here" I yelled.
" Good night Shelby. See you tomorrow and I need you here by 6 pm." She told me and as soon as she handed me my cut of the tips for the night I walked out back and to my jacked up red Chevy.
