Chapter 5

Startled, Dan opened his eyes. He squinted in the sudden light streaming through the trees. The boot he’d felt on his stomach had only nudged him, but it had been more than enough to bring him back to his senses; and he scrambled up to face the person the boot belonged to as his eyes adjusted to the light, expecting it to be the police to drag him into a faraway cell and never let him out.

Surprisingly, Instead of a dozen armed police officers, there stood only the girl from the other night, smirking at him. A girl who (he hit himself mentally for not recognising her instantly last time they’d met) with her spill of aurbern hair stretching down her back, and her mask- the mask- could only be Clara. Or the girl who had called herself Clara anyway.

“It’s you….” He he said blankly, as he stared. Her smirk faded and a look of slight concern passed over her half hidden face.

“Um, yeah,it’s me. From the other night?” She said, looking at him like he was mad. Dan shook his head, frowning, still with the curious empty feeling in his stomach. He refused to look behind him, as he knew he’d see Tasha’s body.

“No. I was meaning it’s you from two years ago. We met at a ball in Dorset. Clara, right?”

The hazel eyes he’d failed to notice before as hers from the ball widened for a moment before turning professionally blank.

“I remember you, Dan…….But I don’t go by that name anymore.” She said in a voice dripping with fake sweetness, then added unnessecarily cruelly, “Do you care to explain why you have a dead naked girl behind you? Actually no don’t, I’ll guess. I’m…guessing it was a vampire and if it’s not please don’t elaborate.” She looked at Tasha, and he glanced back seeing her body and thinking how horribly exposed she was. At the same fury bubbled inside his head. Clara hadn’t been at all affected by Tasha’s body, so how many had she seen? She’d treated her like roadkill. A bit of a shame but nothing that couldn’t be replaced easily. He ripped off his leather jacket and knelt down to quickly cover her, before stroking her blonde hair away from her clammy, horribly cold face and glaring fiercly at Clara.

“She has a name! She’s called Natasha and used to be my best friend. She knew everything about me and I- Don’t call her an ‘it’ in front of me, you- you know just…Ugh!” He spat before quickly getting up, walking away and breathing deeply. How was it possible to feel so emotionless now? He kept waiting for the sadness of all his losses- His Mum, his dad and now Tasha- to hit him and make him break down, give up, simply…stop like he wanted to. But, nothing. Only anger at the way Ariel had presumed his Tash was just another girl and meant nothing, then pity for Tash and everyone else who knew her. Dan expected it would hit him later though, definatly. After rubbing his face fiercly and running his hands through his hair he strode back over and coldly asked Ariel why she was there.

“I’m sorry,” She said softly, pity and understanding filling her voice but ignoring his question, “I really am, that was heartless of me, I didn’t even occur to me you knew her, and I’m just so used to-”

“To what?” He interuppted sharply, “Killing people?”

She looked outraged, narrowing her eyes to slits and opened her mouth to respond before suddenly lifting her hand to her ear where he now saw her earring acted also as an earpiece.

“Yeah he’s here…..He remembers me as Clara, Gee…….” She laughed humorlessly at something the person on the other end had said, her eyes glazed over, speaking as if Dan wasn’t there. “I don’t know, haven’t asked him yet…….Well he’s a bit annoyed with me at the moment, what if he says no,” She shot an uncertain glance in his direction, “Won’t it blow our cover?......Oh fine, fine. Just come out.”
