"Don't look back",  I said to myself as I made my way down the path to my car Id never been so excited to see my ugly little green impala in my whole life, I yanked the car door open and reached for my bag to grab my keys and realized I had left them in my purse that was currently on the living room floor with my phone as well "FUCK fuck fuck fuck fuck", I looked back at the house it looked completely unbothered and I was the only one who knew the truth I got out of my car and ran over to Ms.Grays house. As the shock of the entire situation clouded my brain it only took a few minutes for me to remember that all of my spare keys were at her home my father couldn't be trusted with them and she understood that she was basically my grandmother.

"I wonder if I should tell her what's going on", I thought but decided against it as I got closer to her home.

I got up the pathway and attempted to calm myself so I wouldn't look as frazzled as I feel she'd see right through me I began to bang on the door when I got no answer I went around back to the garage and looked around for the lunchbox all of the spares were in I had no time to tell her I'd taken them ...

I turned and ran back to my car turned the key and I was speeding down the street over to Melissa's house I know she'd know what to do.

As I pulled up in front of the rundown apartment that was my home away from "home" I felt no comfort I didn't even take into account all of the thugs hanging around the place like I usually would I just hopped out and ran towards her building up the stairs and I began to bang on her door.

She answered and I could tell by the look in her eyes she was beyond high, I stood there breathing heavily as tears began to sting my eyes, the full weight of all that had just happened finally hit me.

I could tell I sobered her up by how quickly she pulled me into the old homey apartment Melissa sat me down on her well worn felted green couch and got up to go get me a cup of water as I sat and pictured my father's dead face in my mind over and over again.

He's gone I thought never to yell at me again or break my things or even lock me out, I didn't know if I was actually upset or relieved.

Finally, Melissa made her way out of the kitchen with a glass of water and a cigarette she didn't ask questions she simply lit her cigarette and waited I sat back on the couch and began to tell her what happened.

"My fathers dead" I sounded like an automated message "and I almost died as well I think" I continued completely void of emotion as I spoke, " I don't know what I'm supposed to feel like honestly, he was a shitty father but he was my dad I should feel something, right?"

Melissa flicked her cigarette "did you call anyone?". The hairs on my arms began to stand up and I sat up straighter something just didn't feel right

I looked at her and tried to act normal as I sat my water back on the table "no I came straight here I knew you would know what to do".

She laughed as I sat and stared at her confused I didn't think any of this was funny when she finally finished laughing she stood up and walked to the front door and stood there as if waiting for something and like magic, someone knocked three times.

At this point I stood up I refused to stand there and wait to see who was at the door, I just saw my father laying on his bed in his home with his throat torn open I sure as hell didn't want to be next I ran to the back room and opened the window and began my descent down the fire escape as fast and safe as I could without killing myself or risking someone grabbing me.

"Dammit", I thought as I got to the last two sets of stairs I should have closed the damn window maybe they would have thought I vanished into then air, as soon as my feet hit the pavement I was running towards my car. As I ran up the street and turned the corner to the front of Melissa's building two of the guys that were standing in front of the building turned the corner, one of them grabbed me and opened his mouth as if to speak to me.

Before he could even get a word out I curled my fingers into my hand or into the monkey hand as my self-defense teacher calls it and pushed his nose into his face he stumble away in absolute shock hollering and calling me bitches I could care less I spun out of his friends reach as he tried to grab me and continued my escape to my car only to be extremely disappointed by all of my efforts when I saw Melissa and two very tan extremely rugged but obnoxiously beautiful men next to her.
