I remember the first time I saw you, Johanna.
It was in second grade. Ms. Millers class to be exact.
You walked in with a bright yellow dress, drawing everyone's attention to you.
You had the most nervous look on your face. You were afraid to go in and let go of your parents hand. As much as they told you they'd be right outside the door, you simply held their hands tighter refusing to let go.
So, I got up and came up to you. I don't know what my six year old self was thinking at the moment, but getting up to convince you to sit down seemed reasonable.
So I did.
"It's not that bad. We get to color and play games."
Your brown eyes stared at mine. No emotion on your face. Until a smile creeped up.
"Color?"
I smiled. Knowing I've convinced you.
"Every single one in the rainbow."
Slowly, you let go of your parents hand and grabbed on to mine.
And that was it Jo. That was the moment my life began. That was the moment our story began. And I thought it ended the day you died. But it doesn't end till I say goodbye.
Goodbye, Jo. Goodbye to your beautiful smile, your bright brown eyes, the giggle of yours that could make a whole room glow.
Goodbye my first love.
Goodbye, Johanna Patterson.
