Ice Cold

Chapter 2

Jack was angry, yes. But he was hurt more than anything. His own family...didn't believe him. North had become like a father. Both Sandy and Bunny were like brothers. And Tooth was like a mother to all of the guardians. They all meant so much to him. But it felt as if they had betrayed him.

Jack's grip on his ever-present staff tightened and the snow around him grew heavier, making it harder to see. But not for Jack.

He let his snow pour down everywhere, feeling that it would cover his job. Suddenly exhausted from the use of his powers, Jack asked Wind to carry him to his lake in Burgess.

Jack softly landed on a tree branch that overlooked his frozen home. He had always made sure that thick ice covered the lake, so that no one would meet the same fate as Jack did once long ago. Satisfied that his work was done, Jack decided to rest in order to regain some of his strength.

The Nightmare King smiled cruelly. His plan was working. Step one: to create distrust between the guardians, was complete.

Pitch's minions were working feverishly to melt the freshly fallen snow Jack had created.

Jamie- the boy Pitch knew Jack was close to- had been promised by Jack to have a foot of snow this evening. And Jack never broke his promises. Until now.

Step two was in motion.

Jamie had been disappointed that Jack had to leave so early, but he soon got over it once he remembered Jack's promise.

* (BTW- this is now a flashback)

Jamie sulked home that day with his large hood pulled over his head, still upset at the day's events at school. Jack landed in front of him, "Hey Jamie! I have some free time today, so I was thinking-" Jack's smile disappeared when he noticed Jamie wasn't walking anymore. He was standing with his head down, and Jack could hear small sniffles.

Jack knelt down to Jamie's eye level and placed his cold hands on the child's shoulders, "Buddy, what's wrong?"

Jamie glanced at Jack before mumbling something that Jack barely managed to understand, "IgotmadefunofatschoooltodaybecauseIsaidIbelievedintheguardiansandthatyouweremyfavorite...theycalledmeababyand...and..." Jamie pulled his hood off of his face, "this happened..." Jack gasped at Jamie's swollen face. His right eye was purple and black. Along his jawline, there were cuts and bruises. And finally, he'd gotten two teeth knocked out.

"Who did this?"

"A guy named Tanner." Jamie looked back down at the ground, seeming ashamed.

Jack scooped up some snow and rubbed some of the cold ice on Jamie's face.

"Hey! That's cold! Cut it o-"

Jamie felt his face- the bruises and cuts. They were all healed. "H-how did you do that?"

"I don't know. I...I just did. " truth was, Jack truly had no idea how he'd known to do that. He guessed it was just some...guardian instinct.

Jamie, although healed, still looked glum.

Jack rocked his brain, trying to think of something that would cheer his younger brother-like friend. "Ah ha! How about...in two days, when you wake up, there'll be a foot of snow! Then you won't have to go to that dumb thing called school!"

Jamie instantly smiled and agreed. He hugged Jack, he knew he could always count on Jack. Jack would never hurt him.

* (back to the present)

Jamie laughed as he put his two teeth (the ones that were knocked out) under his pillow. Not only would he get snow and no school, but he'd get a visit from the tooth fairy as well! Jamie curled up under his bed sheets and drifted off, dreaming of playing with Jack in the snow tomorrow.

Me: wouldn't that mean we're killing you?

Jack: *slaps forehead* forget I said anything... *flys off*
