CHAPTER 5
Into The BlueRachel Carter
"Come on Steve, just a little bit more" I urged Steve.
He was walking a lot more steadily now - still with the brace - but it was about ready to come off in a few days and then we could get him to go on a few long walks, maybe even a little hike.
Steve was sweating to death and straining himself. He was pushing himself to the limit and it was paying off for now.
Steve made it to the end and collapsed into his wheelchair. I rushed over and helped him down.
"This is embarrassing. I'm supposed to be able to run ten times faster than any average man but I'm having problems doing what a toddler can do" Steve laughed to me.
"You're relearning something and rebuilding muscles. That can take time. Luckily, you heal faster than the average man as well" I offered him with a small smile. He smiled back at me - he looked a little nervous as well though - odd.
"Well I don't think that I could without such a great coach" Steve laughed back. He settled I to his wheelchair now that he had accepted he needed one - for the time being anyways. "Thanks for your help the last couple of days. You've kept me from overdoing it" Steve explained to me with a dorky half smile on his face.
"You would have been fine on your own. You're a strong person" I offered Steve with a warm smile. He smiled back - even more dorky than before.
Things got a little uncomfortably quiet for a few seconds before the door to the training room slammed open and Cameron skipped in merrily.
"Get packing Rach, we've caught a case in New York" Cameron announced to me with a eager grin.
So much for me staying in the base.
Steve's face perked up. "New York? When do we leave?" he asked with a wild smile spread across his face.
"Sorry Cap. You aren't allowed to leave the base yet. This is just me, Rach and that new kid" Cameron apologised to Steve, it didn't sound to sincere. Cameron patted Steve on the shoulder on his way passed. "I'll grab you a post card" Cameron promised.
I rolled my eyes at him.
"I'll see you when we get back. Don't overdo it. I'll get Simmonds to supervise you" I warned Steve.
He looked absolutely defeated that we were going to New York without him. He didn't know that it was actually only on the surface.
I grabbed my bag and walked out with Cameron.
"What's the case?" I questioned quickly. I wondered why we were walking at such a quick pace.
"A murder in the East Village. Normally we wouldn't respond to it but Coulson asked us to take point" Cameron announced to me while we kept speed walking.
"Why are we walking so fast?" I asked.
"So your new best friend doesn't follow us out. Coulson wants to keep him out of the press for now" Cameron replied.
"Since when did you and Coulson become so chummy?" I questioned. My eyes narrowed to glare him down - Cameron wasn't the type of person who made friends. He had a bad attitude sometimes.
"He's our boss. If I want the best assignments then I need to be in mind when it comes time to hand out the best assignments" Cameron offered.
There was only one flaw with that. "Coulson isn't the type of person to play favourites. Well not if you're not on his own personal team anyways. I heard they're still out there looking for that Skye girl after Ward went all postal ancient evil" I explained to Cameron.
