Happy Early Birthday Assasin!
ADRIAN POV
______
"To glory!" "To death!" "To Jaden!" "To Meria!"
The cry rose up behind me and I could hear the sharp hiss of swords pulled out. I signalled to James, the head of the archers. "ARCHERS HOLD!"
I waited for the perfect moment. High above, vultures wheeled, waiting for prey.
"HOLD!" James called again. Sweat already ran into my eyes, freezing on my brow. The terrain seemed to be filled with white mist as a thousand men breathed.
The Lliavads were about a half furlong away.
"NOW!" I yelled. The deadly hiss of arrows filled the air as they arched over my head, their red feathers flashing. Many found their mark, and men fell as they were hit with the deadly missiles. The last of the arrows disappeared and I shouted, "CAVALRY!"
The thudding of horses hooves was louder than thunder. The Lliavads had no horses and their only defense against the gargantuan animals were long pikes. I wheeled my horse and yelled, "CHARGE!" Bae, my huge battlehorse, reared and shot forward, a huge mass of muscle pounding toward the enemy.
I held on tightly to my sword, weighing it in my hand, balancing it. This was what I had been trained for my whole life. Bae gathered speed as he raced down the hill. It was my job and the job of my brothers and cousins to break the defenses and get to the fortified camp, where the leaders were. I gripped my shield tightly and waited for the impact.
Time seemed to slow and a thousand images flashed before my eyes. A thousand words, a thousand moments. The voices of those I loved floated around me in a cloud. I thought of what Catalyn had said to me one night.
Forever and always.
A leader forever and always. A king forever and always. A fighter forever and always.
Their is no greater then death than sacrifice for what you love.
My father had told me that, when he had gone to war when I was very little. I was fighting for what I loved. Could any death be nobler than that?
I heard the ring of metal on my shield and jerked at the impact. A black clad man, teeth bared was brandishing his sword at me. Swiftly, I jabbed him in the side, and he fell.
The battle had begun.
A crowd of men were around me, dancing closer, and jerking away as I struck out. Some fell. Some didn't. My sword was no longer a weapon. It was a part of me. It slithered through the air, shining and deadly. Bae whinnied and reared as a man lunged in front of him, and the man fell as Bae's plate sized hooves struck him on the head.
War is a messy buisiness. Blood ran from a gash on my arm, and I could feel a a warm trickle from somewhere on my head. I wiped the blood and sweat away and called to my commander. "FLANKS ADVANCE!"
The commander repeated my call, signalling the arrival of the infantry on the field. Warriors in red and black and blue swarmed the field, their swords flashing, the air filled with the sound of their yells. "FOR JADEN AND MERIA!"
Bae whinnied and danced to the side as a huge man rushed forward screaming for blood. I reached into my belt and threw my knife into the chink in his armor, between his neck and chest. He gave a gurgled cry, and fell face down. His body was lost in the onslaught.
