On our way to June’s party, we stopped by a gas station because; Mara had to do a “make-up check”.
Mara was one of those girly girls who cared about her popularity. She even tried out for cheerleading, of course I hated this and preferred basketball, but I still showed support. But let’s face it; Mara was terrible at cheerleading. She may have been pretty, but she was also clumsily than a blind toddler.
After that she was determined to make the team in high school. Even after 3 years she still didn’t make it. She says it was because the team leaders didn’t like her. Since we had played volleyball together in middle school she had decided to try out for the team this year with me. That was why we were supposed to be going to the Crank for practice.
Mara also had a thing for mischief. My mom told me she was bad company, and to make friends with another girl who had a nicer attitude, but we had been best friends since 1st grade, and besides Mara was my sister.
My only sister.
“Hurry up; we are going to be late.” I said in a concerned tone, but Mara just snickered.
“Who shows up to a high school party on time? Oh that’s right, only dorks, who only got invited because, they did a cheerleader’s homework. Its senior year so, in case you don’t want to end up like one of those lame, dorky, college students, I suggest we take our time and be…” Mara racked her brain for the right term. “Fashionably late,” Mara continued with a grin. I grimaced.
“Ok, Miss popularity." with a fake smile, and raised eyebrows, i reach over the passenger seat and open her door to signal her to get out.
“What can I say,” Mara said grinning, while pretending to brush specks of dust off her shoulder. “I’m a pro.” I scooffed and shooed her away.
“Whatever.” I said tossing her purse to her. Then she merrily took off towards the entrance. With nothing else to do, I glanced at the gas prices sign to the left. It read $3.67 “Not bad, for Ohio. Maybe I should get gas here.” Then I glanced at the gas measurement in my car. A quarter tank, mom would not be happy if I ran out of gas on the highway. I opened my door and reached for the gas pump. As I inserted the gauge into my tank a tall handsome boy with dark black and green eyes hair caught my eye, and then disappeared out of nowhere. I looked around just to see him run past me stumbling over the cord. I cursed under my breath as I watched gasoline shoot from the nozzle. I quickly bent down to pick it up.
“Hey! What the he…” I said aloud, but when I looked up, he was nowhere to be seen. I returned the pump back to its place, not bothering to fill up my car. I looked up and saw the price. $35.16.
“Great, thirty five dollars of gas wasted.” I said to myself as Mara walked back over to the car. She had an angry red line running from her cheek bone to her jaw, and she looked mad.
“You will not believe this jerk…” Mara huffed, and then continued. “He just ran straight into me, making me scratch my face on a gumball machine. INTENTIONALLY! Then he just walked off like nothing happened.” Mara then looked at the ground.
“What happened here?” She asked eyes still filled with anger with a hint of curiosity.
“Mara was the guy who shoved you tall and…”
“Hot? Yup, and I might have considered flirting with him out if it weren’t the fact that he totally scarred my face.”
“ Okay, not what I was going for but, Mara calm down….” I say grasping her shoulder to keep from killing someone. I said glancing over my shoulder to see the same guy in the short check-out line.
“Look, Mara! That’s him!” i say pointing toward the clear window that faced the checkout line.
“I think maybe I should tell him off.” She says whilst pulling from my grasp. I grip her shirt.
“Mara its ok, he not worth our time let’s just go.” I said walking towards my car door. I hopped in and looked to my left to see the price on the tank in bold black numbers. I grabbed my wallet then hopped out my car.
“Where are you going?” Mara asked facing me.
“I have to pay for this wasted gas.” i say with a duh, look. Mara frowns.
“Oh no, you ought to make that douche in there pay, he did cause you to spill that right Alex?”
“Yeah, but I don’t want to cause any trouble so…” Before I could finish my sentence, Mara butted in.
“No way, Alex you got to stop letting people push you around.” She said opening her car door, but she didn't get the chance before I shut it back.
"I'll be right back." I grumbled as I walked through the store's entrance.
Inside was cool, and smelled of disinfectant spray.I glanced at the line and notice the person in which I was trying to avoid, right in front of me. I didn't want to be anywhere near him so I decided to pretend to buy some chips. I randomly selected some chips and went to the fridge for some fruit water.
The line had three other people behind the boy so I quickly hopped in line. I glanced out the window to see Mara tapping her freshly done nails against the dash board. She was getting restless and all I wanted to do was get out of the store.
Finally, in what felt like ages, the guy in front of me left the line and walked out of the door. I paid for the stuff I had gotten off the shelves and the gas that was wasted. I also told the cashier about it just to be on the safe side.
After my items were bagged, I quickly walked out the door and almost ran to my car. I got in and started the engine.
“What took you so long?” Mara asked once we pulled off.
“Ah nothing, just me trying to avoid him. I really don’t want to have this conversation. Here are some chips” I replied handing her the bag.
“Fine, but if I ever see him again, it’ll be too soon.” Mara said in a vicious tone. Little did she know that soon, I'd be seeing him again.
