The next morning I wake to the sound of my buzzing alarm clock. I hit the snooze button as I lazily get out of bed. It's 7:02 a.m. and everyone else is still asleep. My slippers skid across the wooden floor as I head towards the bathroom. I twist the door knob, but it doesn’t open.
No sound, but the sound of running water. Typical.
The water stops and the lights go off. The door opens and a sleepy, bed ruffled Mara emerges from the door. She walks past me like she lives here (she basically does) and walks into the kitchen. I scoff. “Good morning to you too, mind to tell me when you got here?” I ask slightly annoyed walking into the kitchen after her.
“I’m not sure, somewhere around 3 a.m., I think, but I remember the strangest thing last night….” She replies groggily. Crap, Mara can’t go one night without trouble.
“What happened now, Mara?” I ask with my arms folded. She looks up at me through squinted eyes.
“Last night Selena took me home like she said, but when we got there my mom wasn’t there. So, I went to get the spare key out of the lamp on our porch it wasn’t there. Then I heard a shattering noise from inside.” She paused and then continued.
“I'm guessing it was just our cat Barney, and mom was just working over time. My dad wasn't home either. Anyways, I figured I would stay the night over at your house. So I had Selena drive me over, but you were already asleep so I just crashed on the couch.” She said out of breath.
“Well that explains everything. Did you call your mom and let her know that you’re over my house?” i ask her eyeing her carefully.
“Yeah, but she didn’t pick up.” she says with a simple shrug.
“You can try again if you want; the phone is in the living room.” I say pointing toward the phone.
“Nah, its fine, I’ll talk to her when I get home or something. After what went down yesterday I don’t necessarily think she’s in the mood to talk with me right now.” She says looking down to her bare feet.
“Ok, well want a bagel or something?” I say pulling yogurt from the fridge.
“Um, how bout’ pancakes instead?” She asks taking out the pancake mix from cabinet.
“Sure make me two,” I say then walk out as she shakes her head and mumbles something about me being lazy. I tiptoe back into my bedroom yogurt in hand, and grab my cell just as it begins to vibrate. On the screen caller ID says unknown.
“Hello?” I hear heavy breathing in the background as a voice speaks into the phone.
“Um, uh, hi is this Alex?” The voice sounds familiar.
“Yeah, who’s this?” I ask curiously, having a feeling I already know.
“OH, uh, this is Ryan. Ryan Carter from last night, ring a bell or a headache?” He replies in a nervous yet, witty tone.
“Yeah, but I don’t remember giving you my phone number.” I say ready for an explanation.
“You didn’t, June had you on her guest list so she gave me your number. Hope you don’t mind but, I have to tell you something.”
“No, it’s cool. What did you have to tell me?” I ask.
“Um, remember how we were supposed to be meeting at the library today?”
“Oh yeah, at four right?”
“Yeah, sorry but I’m going to have to take a rain check, something……” He said before continuing. “….came up.” I was quite for a moment. I mean, HE was the one who had asked me. Maybe he just wasn’t interested anymore.
“Sure, thing. Reschedule?” I ask with hope in my voice.
“How bout we go to see a movie or something tomorrow?” He replied.
“Oh, yeah that sounds good.”
“So, I’ll pick you up at 6:00 after school?”
“Great.” I say in a dazed tone.
“Cool, sorry for the cancel today.” He says trying to catch my attention.
“Oh, it’s fine. No prob. See you tomorrow.”
“Kay, bye Alex.” He is about to hang up when realization comes across my brain.
“Wait, you don’t have my address.” I imply as I hear him chuckle softly.
“Don’t worry I’ll find you.” He says and then the line goes dead. Mara walks in with two, steaming, buttered, blueberry, pancakes.
“Who was that on the phone?” She asks nonchalantly as she drizzles syrup on top. I already know how this will go down if I tell her the truth. So, I lie.
“Oh, just the librarian says I need to renew my books.” I say quickly hoping she’ll believe me.
“Whatever.” She says completely forgetting everything but, the pancakes she has in her mouth. “There are two on a plate for you in the kitchen.” She says through a mouth full of pancakes.
I mutter thanks and walk into the kitchen to put my uneaten yogurt back in the fridge and grab my plate. I pick a pancake from the top, rip it in two and stuff it in my mouth. Mara’s food was always delicious. I look over to calendar.
Friday September 7th. I would have to leave for school soon. I lend Mara one of my sweaters and yoga pants. I shower after Mara and throw on a simple, white, long sleeve shirt and black skinny jeans. I put on a little mascara and lip gloss, and grab my back pack to drive Mara over to her house.
I just hope there won’t be any drama this time.
