I walk out of the shelter and sigh, another day of this living hell that I'm forced to live because my mom left and never came back. I wrap my jacket tighter around me and make my way to the park to make some money so I can survive another day. As I'm walking to the park kind of early, trying to keep warm in this chilly air I see there's a big poster showing that there's gonna be a big concert later tonight. Maybe I can use the people that are gonna gather for the concert to get more money for food and clothes. As I'm almost to the park I get pulled into an alleyway and see a very tall man in front of me with a hood on covering his face. "Hey sweetheart, what are you doing out so early?" I close my eyes and get scared due to the strong smell of alcohol on his breath "I-I'm on my way to school sir... so can you let go so I won't be late?" I lie to him so I can get him to let go but instead he grabs on to me tighter and pushes me up against the brick wall. "Your lying to me little miss, I've seen you around these parts hustling for money. You have no parents right?"
"I do sir, and they're looking for me right now so you better let go of me" I try getting out of his grip and yelling for help but just then he slaps me hard causing me to shut up. He's about to say something else when a man who looks like he was out for a run comes running up to us "hey man let her go?"
"This is none of your business she's just being a spoiled brat, right sweetheart?"
"Dude I just saw you slap her, and she looks terrified so you either let her go or I'll make you let her go." The runner man gets closer and when the other man won't let go he pushes the man off me and tells me to wait for him in the corner by the light pole so I take off running as fast as I can.
After awhile of waiting there at the light pole the runner comes walking towards me with a slight smile on his face, and once he's closer to me he kneels down in front of me and puts a hand on my shoulder. "You OK sweetie? Did that man hurt you?" I shake my head "I think I'm OK sir, my face just stings quite a bit. Thank you for helping me I really appreciate it" I give him a hug and he smiles "you're welcome sweetheart, can I ask you one more thing?" I nod "what are you doing out here so early? A cute little girl like you should still be sleeping or getting ready for school right now." I sigh "I'm homeless sir, I've been homeless for kind of a long time, I was on my way to the park right now because that's where I usually go to sing and perform for money." He looks at me sadly and sighs "hey if I go to the park with some food during my lunch break will you eat with me?"
"Sir you don't have to do that, I-" he cuts me off "no I want to do it, to help you, a little girl like you shouldn't be homeless at your age. I work at the school nearby so I'll come as soon as I can just stay at the park OK?" I nod and smile giving him another quick hug "thank you sir, for everything, I really appreciate you helping me." He stands up giving me a sweet smile "it's fine, I'll see you later sweetie, you be careful OK?" I nod and smile "I'll try my best to be careful."
When the man leaves me I start making my way to the park and pick a spot by a tree to stand for today and pull the piece of cardboard out of my backpack that I use as a sign. I grab a rock and use that to prop up my backpack so I can prop up my sign up against it, I grab a cup out of the trash and put it in front of me for the money people who will hopefully give me money. I clear my throat and start singing old rock songs that I remember my daddy listening to before he went off to war. A few guys who looked like they were on their way to work put some change into my cup and I was thankful for everything that I was getting so far in my cup. I started singing a song that I think was called Bad Company when a man with short black hair, and hair on his face stopped with another man who was bald and had more hair on his face then the other man. They gave me a sweet smile and stood there happily as I sang, causing a few more people to join to listen to me. After I finished the song they all clapped and put some money into my cup I found I thank them and then I notice the first two men that stopped where walking up to me "hi sweetheart, that sounded awesome!" The man with the short black hair tells me as him and the other man kneel down by me. I smile "thank you sir, I appreciate you two stopping to listen to me" they both smile "can we ask why such a cute little girl like you is out here by yourself?" I nod noticing these guys aren't as scary as the man this morning "my step daddy was a soldier and he never came back, and then my mommy left me one day and never came back so now I'm out here by myself."
