It was about 3:45 in the afternoon when I got an unexpected phone call. I looked frantically around the room to find out where the ringing was coming from. I finally found my cellphone. It was hidden underneath my bed spread. I sighed and went to answer it.
I turned it on and saw the number. It was my aunt Elisabeth. She was my mom's older sister. I pressed answer and heard her voice. It was desperate and loud.
"Violetta Gianna Rochester, why didnt you answer you phone?" She was on roll. She even said my full name. Ouch.
"Um...Sorry bout that. I was busy with school work. Uh...Is there anything wrong with that?" I had meant to be kind but the words sounded bratish to me. I took a deep breath and started over. "Im sorry aunt Liz. I was just so busy. And time got by me. So, how are things in Kennett?"
She fell for it and started talking more calmly. "They're okay. I mean, it's not like aliens landed landed here. Just same ol' same ol'." Pause. "And how are your studies? Are coming for the weekend? Im so excited to see you!"
Oh crap. Now what? I had completely forgotten about our shopping trip over the weekend. How am I supposed to tell her that I cant go home because of some careless assigment that I didnt do? Well, I had two options: One, go home and do the assigment and then go shopping with Aunt Liz. Or Two, stay here and do the assingment correctly and get all the points.
Let's go with Two. See how Aunt Liz reacts. Badly, I predict. "Um, Auntie?"
"Yes?"
"So, here's the thing. Um....I cant go home this weekend. I have to work on a very important assingment for Biology. I am so sorry. Truely, I am. I was really looking forward to this shopping trip." I held my breath as I waited for her respond. Ten long seconds passed by.
"Oh." My aunt sounded disappointed. "It's alright. I mean, there'll be more weekends, right? So just have fun and do your work correctly, ok?" Her voice sounded much better. I was pretty sure she was relieved that I was trading her for school work instead of some party.
"Ok, Aunt Angie. Thanks for understanding. I have to go. Can I call you back soon?"
"Sure. Anytime. Im here all weekend. Remember, do your best. I dont want you to end up like me. Working as a waitress at Karaba's."
I smiled to myself. Her job wasnt that bad. I mean you get free food and tips. Except for the occassional whistle, it was all right with me.
I said my goodbyes and hung up. I wondered if all the people had left. I switched my weight to my right foot and started walking. As I opened the door to my dorm, I noticed a note had been popped under it while I was talking to my aunt.
I ripped it open. It was from Martin.
Hey. I heard that your staying. good luck your project. see you monday, V
from Martin
I closed the note. What was that about? I wanted to know what the note was for. I mean its not like he was sorry for what had happened at the ceremony. I shook my head and headed out. I started to hyperventalate. My room seemed to get smaller and smaller and smaller. All of a sudden, I yanked my door open and ran out.
My lungs started to burn, so I slowled down to a jog. I paced around the large, empty hallways. It was eerie quiet. I wanted to just walk out but I couldnt get a taxi at this hour. The hallway smelled like various perfumes. Girls' and guys'. One of them caught my attention. It was a clean kind of smell. Mixed in with pine and soap.
I leaned against the wall and slid down. My butt touched the floor. I wanted to breathe but my insides were all choked up. I wanted to cry but it was stuck. I think. Then words slipped out:
