Monday

Today was one of the rare afternoons I spent since Summer started, at home. This time I decided to come home for lunch during my work hours to keep Aunt Rose company when she came home for lunch too, especially when Duke has been coming around a lot more often for some reason.

I hadn't said much to Duke since my last spat with him the night I came in late. But he had plenty to say to me when Aunt Rose wasn't within earshot. "You need to show me some respect, bitch."

"Calling me a bitch isn't going to make your dick grow any bigger," I walk off before he can respond and move towards the living room to watch TV. He gives me a stink eye, heading into the office that Aunt Rose uses for work at home. While enjoying my lunch, the phone rings next to me in a shrill tone. I pick up wit haste so that I don't miss the call.

"Hello?"

"Hi, may I speak to Miss Sapphire Hudson, please?"

"Speaking, may I ask who this is?"

"This is Gil Friesen, president of A&M records down here in California." I hold my composure, continuing to speak like I'm not about to scream out loud from excitement.

"Afternoon, Mr. Friesen, would it be impolite of me to ask how you got my number?"

"Not at all. A friend of mine happened to be in Minneapolis and he gave me a call and told me about this amazing group down at First Avenue so naturally I asked if he could send in a recording of you all. It was a bit loud from the crowd but I heard all of you perfectly."

"Well, I'm glad you liked it."

"Liked it? I loved it! I'd really love to meet with you and your bandmates soon, maybe we can talk about a record deal and negotiate? You guys have a lot of talent and talent like that needs to be seen and heard."

"I'll have to discuss things with the band before we can make any decisions."

"That's completely fine, I'll have my assistant give you a number to call when you've all decided." His assistant does exactly as he says, leaving me with a number to call. Within two hours, two more record companies have called me. The tape his friend made must've been sent around since they all seem to mention it in our phone calls. I jump around and scream with excitement once I've just processed everything.

Could this be our big break?

My first instinct is to go straight to the girls after work and tell them everything. I decide to go to Sam first, since this news might be just the thing to cheer her up.

I pull up to her house, finding that her car is the only one in the driveway. Her house was usually bustling with activity since her family was always having parties for relatives and friends alike. It was like a ghost town around here. I step up to the door, knocking lightly. I hear footsteps inside and wait patiently for the door to open.
