Once I was seated with Odette opposite to me, I asked her a question that had been lingering in my mind since she’ divulged her secret, but had been too timid to ask earlier, “Odette, could you show me your powers?”
It was a simple question, really, although I was afraid of being denied. Odette, however, complied.
I looked at her expectantly, as if expecting some outburst of energy from within her. She raised her palms facing upwards as though she were lifting an invisible weight. What I failed to notice was that the pillows on my bed had been torn open and there were a great many feathers suspended in the air.
“Wow,” I whispered, awe-struck, when I finally became aware of it.
Odette grinned at me.
“Even though this stuff is amazing,” I stated, “My mom’s so going to kill you!”
“It’s okay,” she replied, a suspicious glint in her brown eyes. With another movement of her hand, this time downwards, the pillows were back to their original state like they’d never been perturbed. I gazed at her in wonder.
“Hey, I need to talk to you,” I said all of a sudden, surprising even myself with the abrupt change of voice and subject.
“Yes?” Odette waited for me to continue.
“I want you to see……,” my voice faltered with uncertainty, “what’s happening to me. All these peculiar events, it’s scary. Can you do it?”
She pondered her answer before confirming it.
“Okay, what about now?” I asked hopefully.
Odette nodded and instructed me to lie down on my bed while she sat near my head.
“Don’t we need any candles?”
Odette laughed airily, “It isn’t like the books and movies, silly. Candles aren’t a necessity for any spell. Though certain spells require them.”
I lay down, my eyes fixed on my ceiling. Odette placed her hands inches beside either sides of my head. I watched her shut her eyes tight in concentration.
“Close your eyes,” she said, her own remaining closed.
“How do you know I had my eyes open?” I demanded.
“I can feel it.”
Making a face, I locked my eyelids.
Moments passed. I started to get impatient and fidgety. How long could I stay in this position, as still as a statue? From behind my closed eyelids, I could feel the light in my room flickering. It was kind of annoying. The wind outside howled fiercely.
“Odet-”
“Shhh.”
Mumbling grumpily, I let silence invade the room once again. After what felt like hours to me but was probably mere minutes, Odette informed me I could open my eyes and I sat up, slowly turning to face her, anticipating her next words.
“So, what do you think is wrong with me?” I pulled up my knees to my chest and wrapped my arms around them.
“Aries!” she sounded like she was in shock.
“What?!” I asked, obviously alarmed at her reaction.
She unwrapped my arms that were locked around my knees and took them in her lap. By this time, I was a nervous wreck. Was I really going mad?
“Am I going mad? Odette? Tell me!” I urged.
“Aries,” her voice was soft and melancholy now. She looked me square in the eye and spoke the most dreadful words of words that are sure to be forever etched into my memory, “You’re possessed.”
