I woke up to the smell of pancakes.
"Lily!" Mom called from downstairs. "Come downstairs. You have about half an hour to get ready."
I sighed and dragged myself out of bed. I was never a morning person. It took me a few minutes to shower and dry off. Then I pulled on my uniform. I liked our uniform, it was more casual than some of the uniforms of the surrounding schools in the area. It consisted of a white blouse, a plaid skirt that was black and red, black knee socks or tights, and a black cardigan with the school logo on it.
I pulled up the sleeves to elbow length and started to tug on the skirt. Mom had bought me one that was a size too small. It fit my waist fine but was a little higher than my knees, as the school handbook had regulated. I gave up and went to brush my hair. By the time I was finished, I had dark brown waves cascading down my back. I put on a tiny bit of mascara and eyeliner to define my big brown eyes.
I looked in the mirror and smiled. I looked good this year, better than I ever had. I had almost lost three stones over summer vacation. I had also grown a few inches taller and had lost my braces. I no longer looked like the sterotypical nerd which I had been labelled since my very fist day at high school.
"Lily!" Mom called again.
I could tell from her tone it was the last time she'd call me. I packed my bag and hurried downstairs. I saw my little sister, Melanie, and my little brother, George already eating. I sat down beside them and grabbed a plate of pancakes, drenching it with syrup.
"I can't take long, Macy will be here soon." I told Mom as I shoveled a forkful into my mouth.
"Oh my gosh. Did you hear that we're getting a new English teacher? Apparently he's smoking hot!" Melanie gushed beside me.
I rolled my eyes. I had heard about him. A lot. Macy was pretty obsessed with the guy even though no one had seen him as it was the first day of school and his first day.
"Yeah, I've heard. I have him fifth and sixth period." I answered, guzzling some of Melanie's orange juice.
"You're so lucky! I don't have him until tomorrow!" she whined.
The doorbell rang. Dad got up and opened it.
"Good Morning, Mr Worthington." Macy said politely. "Is Lily ready yet?"
"I'M IN HERE!" I yelled before Dad could answer. He just stood holding the door open for her.
She walked into the kitchen and grinned at me.
"Looking good, Lily," she told me.
"You're one to talk" I answered.
Macy Harris was my best friend. She had been since we were five. Our mothers were both designers and worked together and so Macy and I saw a lot of each other. We went to the same schools and her house was my second home. We even had the same jobs; working in a candy store across from school. We were practically sisters.
She was beautiful. She had blonde ringlets up to her shoulders, big blue eyes; she was super slim and tall. She had the best tan and looked like a model. It wasn't even fake. She wore hardly any make-up and her hair was naturally curly. People often wondered why she was best friends with a nerdy girl with braces.
"Ready to go?" She asked me.
"Yep." I answered, popping the p.
We said bye to my parents and siblings and set off down the road to get to school. School was about twenty minutes away. Macy and I chatted happily about the summer and she told me more about the new English teacher.
