Twelve Years Ago:
With wandering eyes I look at the approaching black car Aunt May asked me to get into. ' Auntie, when are my mummy and daddy coming back? Will they get me a gift from their trip too? I told them I really wanted that new barbie doll. They promised they would get it for me...'
At the sudden realisation of my words her lips turned from a grim line into a deep frown.
Why's she frowning? She shouldn't be sad. Mummy says you should always be happy.
Walking up to her, I try to tap her shoulder. On my tiptoes, I barely reach it, but wearing these really pretty sparkly pink light up sneakers, they do the job well.
'Aunt May?' I whisper quietly as I see her staring off into the distance. I try calling her again, but she never replies.
'They were never mean't to go like this' her faint words barely make it to my delicate 6 year old ears. Probably not meant for my hearing I guess. Confused, I decide to question her sudden remark.
Raising my voice a little, I say ' Who weren't suppose to go? Where did they go? Maybe they moved away and didn't tell anyone. Please tell me Aunt May, please?'
She turns to me with a look on her face I don't recognise. Its like the face Mummy gives me when Daddy and I have tickle fights, but this time Aunt May doesn't have a secret smile on her face. 'You will know when the time comes. Sienna'.
Oh bother she will never tell me this till I'm 80!
As if she was coming out of a trance, Aunt May shakes her head vigorously as if snow had fallen on her head.
'Run along inside little one. Your bag is in the car already. I'll be there in just a second.' She then kisses my head then rushes off back into my home to grab whatever she needed.
I cautiously walk towards the door of the car and grab the handle, slightly shocked at the cool of the metal beneath my skin. Pulling on it, I open the door to see black leather seats with a bags filled with my belongings.
Odd... Oh maybe we're meeting up with mummy and daddy for a holiday!
Excited with the thought that I'll be going on a cruise, or maybe even skiing, I jump right into the black limo and wait patiently for Aunt May to join me. From the inside, I can see her talking to my nanny, Ms Ivy with a worried expression. I think something bad happened because I can barely see the elderly lady shedding a few tears. And she's one tough cookie.
Aunt May returns after bit, still staring outside the window with a blank face. The driver helps her with her bags and puts them inside the boot. When she walks into the car, she gives me a smile. But I can see sadness as her eyes are bloodshot red, maybe from crying.
Or maybe she didn't blink for a long time.
Once the driver comes into the car and starts the engine, we head off out further from the suburbs out to the countryside. Still not filled with content on where we are going, I turn to Aunt May to see her staring blankly outside the window looking at the scenery passing by.
'Auntie, where are we heading? And are we gonna meet up with mummy and daddy there? Why do you look so sad auntie?' I look up at her.
She gives me a sad look. ' I'll tell you soon.'
Little did I know that my whole world was flipped upside down from that day on.
