CHAPTER FIVE
"Who had a fire?" At the sound of Mason's voice, Grandpa closed the door and the two of us turned around to see him in the kitchen.
"I was at Randi's house last night and we had a bonfire with a couple other friends. It was a lot of fun," I lied.
"It must have been fun if you were gone for so long," he laughed. "I was starting to get worried."
"The only thing that we need to worry about now is getting something to eat. I'm starving," I said.
"Want to make pizza?" asked Mason. "I've already started on the crust."
"Pizza sounds amazing."
Luckily, the two of us had the same taste in food, so we didn't have to argue. Tonight, we chose to use alfredo sauce instead of normal pizza sauce, with black olives and ham on top. The smell of the cooking pizza smelled heavenly to the two of us, but Grandpa disagreed. He left us alone after a few minutes, claiming that the smell was making him nauseous. I told Ari to be careful, because I didn't know if Grandpa was going to try and seek him out.
'Little, I'll be fine. We know each other,' he said, but that only made me more confused.
'You only hatched yesterday, Ari. How can you possibly know him? And how does he know you?'
'He and I will explain the situation to you later,' he assured me. I had to believe him, because Mason just brought the pizza out of the oven. It would be a bad time to go see what Denarios and Grandpa are up to.
Mason and I divided the pizza equally between the two of us, and I still had to swat his hand away from my plate a few times. Once we were done with our late dinner, we tackled the mess we had made before going our separate ways.
I wanted to find Ari and talk to him some more about everything, but I didn't know where to even start looking for him.
'Ari? Where are you?' I thought. I got no response, which made me a little bit worried.
After trying to contact him with the same result, I attempted to look for Grandpa instead. I started looking in his part of the house, then Dad's, then eventually I made my way to mine and Mason's part of the house.
I searched my room last, then went out onto the balcony to see if I could find either Grandpa or Denarios in the front yard, with no luck. I was about to go back into my room until I noticed a small door in the side of the garage. Because the garage and the house were only connected by the balcony, I was able to reach the door easily.
I opened it and was relieved when I saw Ari's large form, but I was startled when I realized that my grandfather was here with him.
"What are you doing?" I shouted at Grandpa before climbing down the stairs and facing him, with my back to Denarios.
'Little, I told you that he's not a danger. Why are you worried?' Ari asked.
"Because you didn't answer! I thought that something had happened, so I've been looking for you both for an hour. Why didn't you answer me, Ari?" I turned to look him in the eye, but he didn't make eye contact.
'You'll be upset if I tell you.'
"I'm upset already."
'I put a barrier between our thoughts. We were discussing something that you are not ready to hear yet, Thalia. I didn't want you to worry.' He still wasn't looking at me, and he lay down at my feet.
"Well, you're right about me being upset. How is that even possible? And why all the secrecy?" I glanced at both of them. "And how the heck do you two know each other?"
