CHAPTER FOUR
The rest of the week passed by in a similar fashion for me. While my brother already made friends with other guys who I thought were just the slightest bit creepy, I was unsure about the new friends I made. There was nothing wrong with being cautious, right?
Luckily it was Friday, meaning I had a whole two days to myself. Two whole days of relaxation and no homework, except for the journals in creative writing.
Mason decided to go hang out with his friends once school was out, leaving me to drive home by myself for the first time.
After a few wrong turns, I eventually made it go the gates of my grandfather's large estate. I typed in the pass code and followed up the driveway to his beautiful house, still not believing it was officially my house too.
I parked the car outside the garage and walked into the house. The place was completely silent as I closed the door behind me.
"Hello? Dad? Grandpa? Anyone here?" I asked before dropping my bag on the floor.
"I'm in the library," said Grandpa.
I walked in and sure enough, he was sitting on a leather loveseat with a book in his hand.
"Where's Dad?" I asked curiously.
"He's out job hunting. Nothing to be worried about," he told me in a reassuring tone after putting down the book.
"Okay. Well in that case, would I be able to go and look around outside?" I asked him. He smiled at me and nodded.
"If its one thing I remember about you its that you could never stay inside when you were younger," he told me.
I nodded and told him that my phone would be on before running up the stairs to my room. In a short amount of time, I was out of my school clothes and in some well worn capris and a dark purple hoodie. I also put on some shoes and ran out of the house.
I made it a couple steps before thinking about food, and how I forgot to pack a lunch today. The door opened behind me and before I knew it my grandpa gave me a large bag with water, food, and a flashlight among other things telling me I may need it. I took the bag without question and made my way to the side of the house where I could see a used path going into the forest.
*
Ever heard the saying 'Everything looks the same'? Well, people aren't lying when they say that after they get lost. Take me, for example. A few moments ago, I was still on the path in the forest. I heard a rustle in the bushes and went to investigate. Five minutes later, and I found myself in a cave.
Usually when people don't watch where they're going, they end up discovering a lake or waterfall or something. But myself? I get lost in a cave.
I tried feeling for a wall or something, and almost succeeded. Technically I did, but my hand got slimy and nasty in the process. I wiped the goo on my pants and continued to try and find a way out.
I realized that I still hadn't looked through my backpack yet, and quickly threw it on the ground and opened it. I used my phone as a flashlight to at least see a little better. There were blankets, food and water, and a flashlight at the very bottom of everything else.
I left out the flashlight as well as a granola bar whilst shoving the rest back in.
Shining around the flashlight, I noticed that there were only two directions to go. Forwards and backwards. On any other day I would have decided to just try and find my way out, but I could see light coming from further inside.
I decided to keep going deeper into the cave, towards the light. Somewhere along the way, my foot got caught in a hole. The hole turned out to be a puddle, and I had to walk the rest of the way with a squishy, soggy shoe.
