Riley ~
I look down through the branches of the pine directly above her. She's still resting although it won't be long until she re-opens those hazel-brown eyes and re-enters the world I've known as home for the past three months, The Gateway.
"Harper Reed." I breath the familiar yet distant words into the light wind circling above. I caress her angelic features with my eyes, revising every freckle, every crease, every curvature of her face. They were right, the Elders, they told me that she would be here soon.
I watch as the sun tickles her face and almost chuckle as she groans, murmuring something along the lines of, "Bloody nightmares."
I sink further back to the trunk of the tree, letting the leaves engulf me as she peels back her pale eyelids. Grimacing, I watch her mouth form an 'o' , her hand unconsciously traveling to close it. She stares in shock at the light charcoal sky and at the pink-grey orb, the colour of my baby sisters comforter, floating just above the tree line.
A tear drop begins to trickle down her cheek and she hastily wipes it away, just as wary of her emotions as before. I want to climb down and comfort her, to wrap her in my arms and tell her everything's going to be alright. But I know I can't. If she see's me now she might become so distressed that she'll never wake up. Plus, everything won't be ok, at least not yet.
