ch 1: the breakup

basically the only gmw couple i hardcore ship is riarkle. lucaya is highly unlikely in this story (I might change my mind depending on where this story goes) but you never know...

"I had to end it, Maya. The relationship was going nowhere and there were absolutely no sparks," Riley explained. She was standing in her apartment in New York City on the phone with her best friend who lived all the way across the country. "Lucas is great, but just not for me," she decided firmly.

Maya sighed, "I get it, he's boring."

"Yup," Riley agreed, "it feels weird being single though, like I put a good two years of my life into that relationship and now it's just over."

"Welcome to the sad life of being single... but don't worry honey, maybe you'll meet someone at vidcon next week!" Maya offered.

"Yes, because I'm totally looking for a new relationship now," Riley said sarcastically, "I just don't know how to tell my fans. They're gonna be crushed. Most of them were more invested in 'Rucas' than I was."

"When I broke up with Josh, there were people literally signing petitions to get us back together, but most of the backlash died off within a few weeks. So don't worry, they'll get over it eventually," Maya promised her.

Riley sighed, "you're right, as always. I better go update them on my current relationship status now, wish me luck."

She hung up the phone and set up her filming equipment. After taking a few moments to gather her thoughts, she took a deep breath and pressed the record button on her camera.

"Hey guys," she began, "so I usually don't make videos like this, but I think I needed to. I've been getting questions about this for days because a lot of people have noticed that something is going on," she paused and took another deep breath, "as most of you may know, I've been in a relationship with Lucas, also known as RangerRick17 on YouTube, for a little over two years. I met him when I first started YouTube when I was 16 and I honestly thought we were going to get married. Now, however, I'm almost 20 and things have changed. As we both matured and grew up, we started to realize that maybe our perceptions of each other weren't exactly reality. So yes, as most of you have figured out, we have in fact broken up. We ended on good terms- it was mostly mutual and we're still good friends. But on a happier note, vidcon is in a week and I am super excited to meet some of you guys! And of course, I'm dying to see Maya, my best friend in the world! Her YouTube channel is QueenOfHartsX and her beauty videos are amazing, so if you're not subscribed to her, you're missing out. Plus, I'm gonna be doing a bunch of collabs while at vidcon and she's probably gonna be in a few so it'd be a smart idea to get to know her now."

Riley smiled at the camera and waved, "okay, bye guys! Thanks for watching this short, little update video!"

She quickly edited the video and began to upload it onto her channel. While it was rendering, she typed out a tweet that said, "hey beauts! new video up in 5! xx." Once the video was posted, she decided to avoid Twitter and Instagram for a bit and check her YouTube subscriptions to see if any of her favorite YouTubers had uploaded. A few had: Maya posted a video talking about vidcon and Riley (Riley commented "I love u sm peaches, can't wait til next week"), Isadora (SmackleInYourFace) posted a gaming video, Zay (ZebraZay) posted a vlog, and one of her all time favorite YouTubers, RobotMinkus, posted a video discussing everything wrong with meninism. She clicked on that one right away.

"Hey guys, it's Farkle!" he said, his face appearing on her computer screen, "so today, I decided to talk to you guys about a rather controversial topic... meninism. If you don't know what that is, it's basically a bunch of sexist men, and some women, who not only refuse to admit they're sexist, but believe feminism is somehow a threat to their lives. Which I find quite strange because I'm pretty sure feminism is advocating equality for not just women, but all people..."

As Farkle continued to rant about the stupidity of 'meninists,' Riley typed up a comment saying, "God bless you, I 100% agree with everything you're saying...please play this video at a meninism convention or wherever those misogynistic pigs go in their free time." A few minutes later, he replied saying, "HAHAHA thanks, that's the goal. love ur vids btw!!"

She responded with "I probably love yours more tbh." Within a few seconds, the comment section of his video blew up with people already talking about "riarkle" and how badly they wanted it to happen. She laughed while scrolling through them, but then she remembered that people must also be talking about her and Lucas. Overcome with curiosity, she nervously clicked on her video and read through the comments. Most of them were positive and she could wipe the sweat off of her forehead, but others were brutal. One even said, "she just dumped Lucas and now she's already onto Farkle...what a whore." That one hurt. Curiosity killed the cat, she thought to herself.

Suddenly, her phone beeped. It was a Twitter DM.

"Hey, just watched your recent video...don't let the hate get to you, most of those people are trolls anyway." From @farkleminkus.

Her breath hitched in her throat when she saw it. "Haha thanks, I definitely won't. I'm super excited to meet you at vidcon btw, your videos are my favssss."

"Woah really, thank you:) I'm honored, you're practically the queen of YT. I've watched your videos since I first started. And we should definitely hang out next week!!" -@farkleminkus

Her heart was beating faster as she typed back a response. "Wow, you're an OG member of rileytown then, that earns you a spot in my best friend club."

"Best friends already? I'm living my dream ;)" -@farkleminkus

"That was supposed to be :), not ;). I did not intend for that to be sexual." -@farkleminkus

She found herself blushing when she read his reply and even more impatient for vidcon to come.
