CH II
The entire journey home was uncomfortable; we didn't have anything to talk about so I spent most of the journey looking out of the window. The street; the people; everything I had seen in movies were in front of my very eyes. The buildings, even the telephones; everything was different for me. Everything was beautiful. I was so distracted I didn't realize we had arrived home.
The house was really big, with a beautiful cherry tree in front of it.
I hopped out of the car as soon as it stopped moving. I was so excited to see how the place where I was going to stay for an entire year would be.
I was about to take my suitcase from the trunk when someone stopped me.
"Don't, honey, Kane is going to do it," I heard Claire say in a soft voice.
I immediately turned to look at him. His face reflected annoyance.
"No really, I can do it," I insisted.
"Kane," Claire called.
He gave me a cold glance and took the two suitcases off my hands.
"Thanks," I told him but he didn't reply.
We entered the house. My first thought was: It was HUGE!
It was a two storey house.
The living room was way bigger than mine back in Sydney, with a set of burgundy velvet armchairs in a Renaissance style, and a slight smell of old. I could see a small table in the middle of the room with a vase full of roses. They were obviously bought today because they looked fresh.
The kitchen was small but cozy. It reminded me of my dollhouse's kitchen. It had a half- size silver oven next to the dishwasher, cupboards with oven mitts over the doors, and two containers of decorative fruit. The odd thing about this kitchen - well at least for me - was the fact that you could actually see it from the dining room. I mean, there wasn't a full wall between them, instead, there was a big window coming from the top to the middle of the wall.
I was so immersed in the beauty around me that I didn't hear what Caitlin was saying. She grabbed me by the hand, pulling me upstairs.
"You are going to love our room. I organized it especially for you." I couldn't help but smile every time I heard her British accent. She sounded so adorable.
"Oh, thanks. That's really nice of you," I replied.
I surveyed the room. It was fairly modern, and nothing like what I had expected.
The walls were a soft pink, with two abstract paintings on them and the covers were beige. There was a big window next to my bed, from which you could view part of the street and a small park. I swear it looked like Wendy’s room in the Peter Pan movie.
There was no sign of any childish thing in that room. Well, except for the One Direction posters inside Caitlyn’s wardrobe but c'mon, I was 17 and I liked them.
We spent over an hour getting all my things out of the suitcases and into their respective places. We finished just in time, because at that moment Claire called us for dinner.
We ate fish and chips. I was very excited by this; I mean, I have eaten fish and chips before in Sydney, but the fact that it was one of the most popular dishes in England, and that I was eating it in London made it a new experience.
Despite my excitement at my new experiences, I noticed that throughout dinner Kane didn't even look at me. I felt the urge to ask him what was wrong and why he was so angry with the fact that I was living with them. I knew that they had been a host family for a long time now, and that Kane had never had any problem with any exchange student before. Well, not that I knew of; but I decided not to say anything because I thought it would make the atmosphere more uncomfortable.
It wasn't easy to sleep that night. I spent the night looking through the window, down at the street. A beautiful street of London.
I was so happy to be here - I really was, but I missed my family so much and it was only day one so I wasn't sure if I could handle it.
