Auklet awoke early the next morning, her talons stretching to stroke the seaweed that they couldn't seem to find. Glancing down at tail curled neatly beside her, she jolted upright and jumped.

SkyWing in the palace!

Her head sank into her hands. She was the SkyWing, and the last thing she needed was for Prince Cliff and Queen Ruby to think that she wasn't right in the head. And speaking of Cliff, a small scrap of paper caught her extremely sharp SkyWing eyes.

Dear Crimson,
I wish I could ask you in person, but my mother has me working on some royal stuff right now, so this letter will be the best I can do. There is a ball planned tonight for her hatching day festival, and it would be wonderful if you could attend it with me as my guest.

He really wanted her to come with her as his guest, instead of one of the other female SkyWings in the kingdom? Her heart leaped with joy as she continued reading.

I hope that you will consider it. Servants will deliver you breakfast and some of my mother's old jewels that she sends you. She says that you may wear them for as long as you want. I say you don't have to wear them at all, as you are just as beautiful without them.
Sincerely,
Prince Cliff

Two baskets were laid out on the floor and she examined the contents. One was full of jewelry with precious stones twined into the golden wires. The other was brimming with baked goods, bread and cakes, vegetables, and some kind of roasted bird. Suddenly famished, Auklet dug into the food. She eyed the jewels.

Okay, I'm going to the ball.
