Chapter Three

Lucy's POV

I quietly hum the tune of "Love Me Do" by the Beatles as I stare at the dense forests ahead of me. I look up at the stars and start to think about how my life was before this moment. Was I really happy? Was I ever happy in that life at all? My mother was always prim and proper, and she tried to mold me into becoming like her more than a few times. I shudder as I remember her rules in the house.

Be home by 6:00 pm sharp!

No shoes in the house! Ever!

Iron your clothes every Friday!

No friends over!

No sleepovers!

No boyfriends till you graduate college!

No junk food, none at all!

And absolutely,

Under no circumstances,

Will you have a boy come near you!

I was a fantastic student, with high marks and a very stable relationship with my parents. I was always proper, I dressed nicely even at home, and I was considered perfect.

Everything was perfect.

And I hated it.

Annabeth was my only friend sometimes. She listened to me and didn't put unreachable expectations on me. I was going to miss her.

I started to get lost in my thoughts after a while until I passed my tree.

Our tree.

July 10th, 2009

"Chase, grab the stick, this is the perfect tree!" I squeal, before shushing Chase who was laughing loudly.

"Shut up! Mother'll catch us!" I whisper, trying to cobtain my own laughter.

He grabs the sharpest stone he could find and we go to carve our intials into the tree.

C + L.

I smile and hug the tree with a soft chuckle.

Suddenly, Chase turns to me with a deep grimace.

"Lucy, your mom is coming!" Chase whispers frantically.
