First thing, sorry it took so long for me to post this chapter. But thank you guys so much for all the nice comments and to everyone that read it! This chapter is kind of short but enjoy.

“Lacey!” called Veronica in the bathroom in a singsong voice.

Had she wanted me to go in there? I thought to myself.

“Lacey!” I heard again, “We’ve run out of toilet paper. Do your best friend a favor and go buy some, please?” She begged.

The clock stared right back at me in its bright red light—12:03 am. Throwing on a jacket, I sighed. I didn’t bother to change out of the PJ pants. I slipped my feet into the spotted flip-flops, grabbed my phone, and exited the apartment.

My hair blew in the air, on my face as the wind followed me. Last night, I dreamt mom and dad. It had been a while since I had, and this morning I couldn’t help the tears that stung my eyes. But I knew I had to stop.

“It’s been a whole damn year.” I thought aloud. I had to stop them from affecting me, I had to get over it and move on with my life. The worst part was that every time I shed tears, I felt like I had to punish myself. I thank God for Veronica, or I guarantee that I probably wouldn’t be able to keep on going. I ask myself this all the time, but it’s slowly becoming true. What purpose does a person have when all that they had is now gone. Vanished before they have a chance to blink.

What purpose do I have?

“None,” I chuckled.

The sound of wind chimes rung when I entered the Mini-Market. I smiled at the man behind the register, Rob. He laughed in return. He knew why I had come here.

Veronica had a habit of forgetting to by bathroom supplies—everything from soap and toilet paper to pads and tampons. It was awkward, especially everyone who worked at the Mini-Market were men.

That imbecile.

I began walking around in and out of the aisles grabbing other things Veronica and I would need. When I caught sight of The Scott toilet paper rolls, I grabbed 5.

As I was making my way to pay for the items held in my hands, I dropped a roll of toilet paper. I cussed silently as I bent over to get it.

Bad idea.

I ended up falling along with everything else I was holding, the eggs smacking on the floor and making a loud “Crack”. Rob looked over only to laugh at me, and I groaned. That wasn’t the reason I looked up though. Someone else was laughing along with Rob. I scowled at the guy I have never seen and said, “You know, the least you could so is help me up, or pick up my stuff.” He stared back, obviously amused.

“No.” he answered smugly. Shocked, I watched after him as he walked over to Rob. People can be so inconsiderate sometimes. Plain rude. I have so many words for that arrogant jerk, but instead of spitting them at him, I picked up my stuff, pushed passed him, and slammed my products in front of Rob.

“How much?”

“$27.52”

He put the groceries in one bag and the toilet paper in another. Turning around, I glanced at the young man who had been laughing at me just a minute ago. My breath caught at our proximity. His dark brown locks hung over his forehead, nearly covering his gray eyes. My eyes did a quick run down his body. He wore a burgundy V-Neck shirt that clung so tight to his body; it looked like his muscles couldn’t breathe. I bit my lip. He smirked at me. “What?” I furrowed my eyebrows.

“You’re the one staring.” He pointed out. He pushed me gently and because of the groceries, I nearly fell again.

I watched as he paid for his Arizona Iced Tea, and took a sip from it after opening the can. He looked back at me, and for a while we seemed to be staring at each other, daring each other to look away. Giving in to the little contest so I bid adieu to Rob. Before leaving, I glanced at the guy again, who was now approaching me, and left.

I began to feel paranoid—like someone would just pop out of nowhere and attack me. Every few seconds, I would look around me to make sure I was alone, and that no one was following me. I checked my phone, praying Veronica would just call, but she didn’t. Of course she wouldn’t, she was probably still taking care of business on the toilet.

Soon, our apartment building came into view. I skipped towards it, relieved. But something caught my eye as I was heading into the lobby. When I turned to look back to see if I’d see it again, there was nothing there. I shrugged.

“What took so long?” asked Veronica when I entered the apartment.

I placed a roll of toilet paper in front of the door, not wanting to go in there and handing it to her myself.

“Just some prick I encountered.”
