Mason couldn't help but smile as Peel stalked back and forth in the confines of the small waiting room, and although the reason they were in the waiting room was very serious Mason couldn't help but defer to his usual jovial self.
"A very nice pep talk there, old man. Even the bit about keeping away from the booze" he said the last bit with a tilt to his head.
Peel stopped in the middle of the room, studied masons hideously smug face and then said,
"The lad needed it, that was a tough first outing with us and nothing he will have seen as a beat officer would have prepared him for it. The last thing I need is a teary eyed constable who needs to hold my hand. I needed to see if he would fold. So far so good"
Mason nodded in agreement "Sink or swim, that's what I told him. But the alcohol Robert?"
Peel grimaced "We all know that drink is no answer. As for me, well we all know that I've been long fucked regarding that score, don't we!"
Not waiting for a response and not getting any but affirmative nods Peel marched out of the room "I've had enough of this I'm off to find a doctor who can tell me what's happening"
Muck's head flew up at hearing that. Placing his phone into his pocket he quickly followed saying to Mason "Oh shit, I better keep an eye on him he doesn't play well with doctors"
Peel rang the small brass bell that had been placed on the nurse's workstation and impatiently waited. Thankfully Muck heard a nurse approach and come into view.
"Can I help?" She asked
Peel gave a slight smile "Yes, can you tell us what's happening with Rebecca, we need to question her soon as possible, it's extremely important"
Muck saw the nurses face fall from being helpful to annoyance in an instance.
"You do understand what happened to the poor girl, don't you. Even if her injuries were instantly healed she will be almost definitely suffering post-traumatic stress. She won't be able to answer anybody's questions for some time" time and experience had quickened her temper.
Peel blankly stared as she spoke, he had expected this type of response from the nurse, the same response he got from all nurses. He didn't understand why they were always so concerned with their patient even though that patient could potentially save another life.
"Sorry nurse" he made a notable glance at her name badge "Sutton, what you need to understand is that there's another girl out there somewhere and Rebecca may be able to help us find her. We need a few minutes with her soon as possible"
Muck winced at Peels lack of understanding and compassion in these delicate situations and before the nurse could release her scathing rebuke he stepped up to her desk and quickly asked
"Nurse Sutton we fully understand and will comply with all of your recommendations isn't that right Boss"
Peel begrudgingly nodded, he knew he could be course and this wasn't the first time muck had stepped in to smooth things over.
Muck smiled at the nurse and asked,
"Please, did Rebecca say anything before she went into surgery, anything at all"
Warming up to the quietly spoken detective she said " Detective?"
"Grayson"
"Detective Grayson, Rebecca was in no state to talk when she came in. The medics had already sedated her and it was soon after that she went into surgery. I doubt she'll be able to talk for a while. That poor girl is going to need counseling for some time to come"
