The sun rays filtered in through the crooked blinds, revealing dust mites drifting in the air. My eyes fluttered open from the harsh light burning through my eye lids. Twisting around, I noticed that my alarm clock was flashing. There might've been a power outage. I wasn't really concerned about not being aware of the time, because I didn't have work on this Saturday morning. I've been an employee at Walmart as a cashier for 2 years now. I rose from the bed and roamed to the door. I rotated the knob and pulled back to reveal a dresser blocking the door. Strange. I shambled to the room that belonged to my two sisters to discover the room was vacant. The bedsheets were balled up in a mess and pillows were scattered across the floor. I exited the room to go to my older brother's which was empty as well. Judging by the position of the sun, everyone should still be asleep. I returned to my room and reached into my nightstand to retrieve my watch. The hands read 7:00. Everyone usually slept in till at least 9am. I crept downstairs to find a trail of blood leading from the kitchen out to the back door. I followed it and opened the door to see the trail go cold. It stopped right after the door. I trudged inside and saw the television on. The screen was black and white and no sound was emitted. I wandered to my parents room to hear a faint, scratchy sound escaping the old radio my dad still had. I turned up the sound to hear a public service announcement. "Everyone, please stay indoors at night. Stay indoors at night. If you're going outside please be armed. If you need to kill one, go for the head and only the head. Don't get bit. I repeat don't get bit. Don't get-" I shut off the sound and walked to the window. Stumbling figures limped in the street. The sunlight exposed the decomposed bodies of the walking creatures. Rotten teeth that were as black as coal snapped at the air. Tattered clothes and velvety liquid covered the figures. Zombies? This couldn't be. I strided back to the radio and listened to the remainder of the announcement. "Don't get bit. You will turn. Stay away from the biters. Help is on the way." Biters? Hmmm, interesting term. A deafening yell echoed throughout the neighborhood. I sprinted to the window and fingered the blinds to get a view. Mrs. Connors was escaping her door and the "biters" were following her. She was glancing back when she ran into one of the creatures, and stumbled to the ground. One of the biters stood over her and took a chunk of flesh from her neck. More gathered in on the feasting as cries escaped her mouth. Blood vessels sprayed liquid everywhere as organs were being taken out of her exposed body. These were cannibals, eating any human in sight. I went to the head of my parents bed and reached for the sword resting on its mount. The katana my grandfather had given my dad before he passed. I scrambled to the closet where my dad stores his hunting supplies. My family was filled with hardcore hunters, myself included. I picked up a gym bag and filled it with an L96 and a glock. Stuffing ammo boxes inside, the bag wheezed as I placed weapon supplies inside. I grabbed the machete off the wall and placed it inside. I opened the rusted chest resting against the wall that held my crossbow that I used daily. I put down the katana and slung the crossbow over my shoulder. I wasn't sure what to do with the katana so I grabbed a belt and secured it on my hip, almost like a pirate position. I moved to the kitchen and scavenged all the food I could. I grabbed some photos from my bedroom and retrieved the keys for my jeep. I threw my bag in there and went back into the house for more. I managed to throw in a sleeping bag, blankets, pillows, a lantern, numerous flashlights, rain boots and pairs of extra clothes. I placed the keys in the ignition and started searching the garage. I figured if I got in trouble I could get a quick getaway. The key wasn't turned all the way, so the car wasn't on. I picked up a gasoline tank, a hose and other tools that could be useful. I grabbed the hose incase I needed to siphon gas. When I returned into the house I headed towards the phone. I pressed it to my ear to reveal a dead line. 12:30 was the time on my clock. I decided if I had no family here, why not go find others I knew. The rest of my family was settled in Florida and Ohio. I live in Texas so Florida sounded like the best idea. I wasn't entirely sure what the plan was. I didn't even have a GPS.
I plumped down into the jeep after throwing up the garage door. I decided to see how my best friend Ashley was holding up. When I pulled out of the driveway I turned onto the main road. The street was crammed with the walking dead. I veered off onto a smaller road which was less populated. The radio still played local stations with their overplayed music and warnings played across on other stations. The warning said to try for Fort Hugh, which was located in Florida. I switched to music and cruised down the road. The red brick house came into view and I pressed on the brakes. I took the katana out of its casing, which was secured on my belt, and prepared myself for what was to come. When I walked up to the door a crash came from inside. I budged the door open and chaos played in front of my eyes. Three walkers surrounded 3 of her brothers. Panic rushing through my veins, I sprinted to them. I swung my sword taking out the three walker's heads. Worry and pure fear gathered in their eyes. I whispered, "it's okay I'm here. Where's your sister and parents?" The youngest of the 3, Jonathan, spoke up," mom and dad.... They... th...they got bit and we locked them in the bedroom. Ash was upstairs and we haven't seen her." I nodded and told them to stay put. I went up the stairs swiftly and opened the door to Ashley's room. A yelp escaped from her mouth as a biter closed in on her. I stuck my sword through its eyes and yanked it out. Amazement flashed across her face. She came over to me and hugged me tightly. She told me what happened to her parents and her other brother. She had 4 but now only 3. We ran down the stairs, picked up her brothers and went to the car. I was 2 years older than her and 5 inches taller. She stood at 5 feet exactly. I was 20 and my long brown hair framed my sweaty face. I told her my plan to go to Sarasota to find my aunts and uncles. She nodded and we continued down the road and reached a gas station. I told her I'd get some supplies and check if the gas would pump. I went into the station which was wiped clean. When I walked back out 5 walkers surrounded the car, 2 of which were feasting on 2 of Ashley's brothers. She sat there panicking, unaware of what was going on. I pulled my crossbow off my back and stuck an arrow through a walkers eye. I sprinted towards the other and stabbed another. I ran to the other side of the car and saw a biter closing it's jaws on Ashley's arm.
