The new dawn arrived and an early start to the search was the only thing on my mind. I was the first awake and geared up before leaving. I wandered in the direction opposite of the highway, west of the farmhouse, an area unexplored. Time flew by. I checked my watch and it'd already been 50 minutes of aimlessly roaming around.

10 more minutes passed when I stumbled across a cabin in the middle of the woods. The door was cracked and the curtains drawn. It was odd how the glass in the door was broken. I crept inside, katana in hand. The harsh odor of burned carcasses filled my nose, causing my eyes to water. There was an air mattress deflated on the ground, many blankets strewn across it. Books spilled across the dwarf table to the right. A fireplace was on and still burning. However, it wasn't burning wood. Charred skulls laid in the fire. I backed away with a horrified expression.

That's when I saw it. Blood covered its exterior. An arm was missing. Sophia's doll was laying on the ground in front of the door. I must've stepped over it when I walked in. I picked up the beat-down doll and fixed it in my belt loop.

I exited the house and followed a trail of small footsteps leading to a lake. The trail went dead on the edge of rocks, which was a 12 foot drop into the water. An unforgettable voice filled the air. The scream sounded 200 feet north of me. I hauled ass across the water and climbed the rocky surface to arrive to a neighborhood. It looked like a utopian society, despite the roamers lurking inside the gates. Beautiful two story houses came into view. Another scream pierced the afternoon sky, escaping from a house at the far end of the neighborhood. The door was wide open and biters flooded into the house. I swayed my katana in my hand, preparing for what was to come. I entered the house and 10 walkers were congregated at the door. I swung straight through 5 of their heads, impaled one between the eyes, and finished off the rest with one more swing. Cries were coming from upstairs. I ransacked through vacant bedrooms to try and locate the source of the yelps. The last room had roamers piling in the doorway. I pulled out my pistol and mowed them down. At the window a small figure was getting ready to jump. "Wait! Don't!" The figure turned around, eyes wide. "Holy shit," I mumbled to myself. There sat Sophia, heaving and crying uncontrollably. She was clutching onto a bloodied steak knife. Her knuckles were white from squeezing the grip of the kitchen utensil so hard in her trembling hands. She popped up and ran over to me, embracing me in a tight squeeze. "Sweetie I'm so glad I found you. Are you okay? Were you bit?" "I...I am too... And no...no I wasn't." My long sigh was filled with relief. "Thank God, let's get you back to your mom." We walked down the stairs, Sophia clutching onto my left hand, my katana in the right. I just couldn't stop smiling, thinking about how Carol would react. When we were leaving the house my mouth dropped. "Fuck."

The gunshots and her cries for help must've awaken the dead. Countless corpses headed this way. Anger fueled through me. I was tired of constantly running. "Sophia sweetie, stand behind me and be alert. If you see some coming let me know. Watch my back and yours too. If you need to run, go towards the trees north of here until you find a farm. That's only if you have to run. Make sure you keep the lake on your left side if we get separated." She nodded her overwhelmed head. I reloaded my pistol and still had 3 clips in my pocket. My crossbow was loaded and had more arrows waiting to be used. My katana was stuffed in its sheath at my side. Around 50 flesh-eaters were heading my way. I pulled out my pistol, unloading on every walking carcass in sight. I hadn't missed one shot yet, all penetrating the head of the biter. I reloaded and picked more off. I finally went through all the rounds and 15 more biters were inching towards us. I pulled out my crossbow and silenced the nearest roamer that was 5 feet away. I removed the arrow from its left eye socket and impaled another walker by shanking it with the gory arrow. The katana was now in my hand and slicing through the remaining lurkers. I looked around at all the bodies on the ground, proud that I actually took down this many in one sitting. I shuffled through the now permanently dead figures, checking to see if I missed one.
