what separates me from you.

walking in the front door after the first day of school was amazing. i couldn't wait to get home.

as always, my mom and layla had cookies ready for me.

"hey buddy! how was school?" my mom and layla were sitting at the table drinking tea,

a big plate of warm chocolate chip cookies in the center.

"pretty good." i answered, taking three cookies and heading for the stairs.

"off to do homework?" layla said, with a slight smile.

"you know it." i nodded, and headed up the steps to the sound of my moms voice, complaining on how she wanted to hear about my day.

as soon as i got to my room, i closed and locked my door.

i flipped open my computer screen, waiting for the login to show. i nibbled

on a cookie as i heard knocks on my door.

"yes?" i said, my body freezing.

"are you alright?" my moms voice came through the door.

"yeah, i'll be down in a second." i said, logging onto my computer.

i heard her walk away, a shot of relief running through me.

carefully, i typed google.com into my web browser.

once the page loaded, i slowly typed a f. then an a, and finally a g. i hit enter,

staring at the screen.

i clicked on the first link, reading what the paragraph stated.

" Fag, or faggot (slang), an American English slur for a homosexual or effeminate man. "

i stared at the definition for a couple seconds, realizing the boys had called me a homosexual.

i was only 12, and had no idea if i liked girls or boys. i liked everyone the same.

i shrugged, heading down with my mom and sister.

"my day was great. i made a new friend, kira. she'll make up for tyler definitely!" i smiled, eating another cookie since i left the other ones up in my room.

"that's good eric." my mom smiled, tapping the side of her mug. "i think you should start making friends with some boys. you only have girl friends."

she looked at me with concern.

"oh trust me, i do. i, uh, made some today."

i smiled, even though that was a complete and utter lie.

"oh great! you should invite them over sometime."

layla added. she knew i was joking.

"yeah, definitely." i smiled and nodded, pouring myself some tea that was set in a pitcher

next to the cookies.

3 days of school passed, and the boys in my homeroom ignored me. i was now friends with all

four girls in my homeroom. kira, maddie, justine, and hannah.

i wasn't friends with any of the boys.

as i sat in homeroom on friday, one of the fat kids friends, whose name was ben,

dropped a note on my desk.

i ignored the note until the bell rang, meeting up with kira and maddie in the hallway.

"ben gave me this note."

i showed the girls the note, slowly unfolding it.

we all gathered around, whispering the words softly.

"why are your only friends your mom and girls? fag, man up.

you're too much of a queer to smell like cologne, try some perfume."

i gulped, crumpling the note.

maddie stared at the floor, her eyes as big as the moon.

"eric, our promise. ignore them." kira said, trying to meet eyes with me.

i was focusing on the floor too, just like maddie.

"i'm guessing queer means the same as fag."

i wasn't even sure if i pronounced 'queer' right, but i knew these

boys were calling me a homosexual.
