I glance down at my phone, wondering to myself where my mother was. She was supposed to be here over an hour ago. I had just finished my service project for CARE. We didn't really know why we named it that, it just made sense. I lean against the cool metal railing on the stairway leading into our school. I hear a ruckus coming from the insides of the school, and I think to myself, "Detention just got out, great. I will soon be surrounded by the school's biggest trouble-makers." They all file out quickly not paying much attention to me, all except him. I didn't think he would notice me just like the rest of them haven't.
"Excuse me, um Annabelle, why are you at the school this late?" he smirks, "you get detention too?" he laughs quietly to himself.
"No, and for your information I was finishing my CARE service project."
"Doesn't surprise me," he says under his breath.
"Excuse me?" I say slightly ticked off.
"Nothing, need a ride?"
"What?" I look at him, caught off guard, since he was just insulting me.
"Do. You. Need. A. Ride?" he says slowly.
"I-I don't even know you, and how you know my name is beyond me." I roll my eyes and look the other direction.
A smirk covers his face, "I'm James. James Ryan." I stare at him for a few moments. Then slowly smile back.
"Annabelle Swan. Do you still have that offer for a ride open?"
"Always for someone like you," he smirks.
"What's that suppose to mean?" I ask quizzically, following behind him to his car.
"Oh, nothing." He unlocks his Camaro. My eyes widen slightly. Noticing my reaction he chuckles a little, "What? You've never seen a Camaro before?"
"No I have, just not in this good of shape. 69' right?"
"Yeah. How did you know?" he looks at me confused, laughing nervously as he slips into the driver's seat.
"My dad, he works with cars." I smile and slide into the passenger seat. "This, this is amazing." I look around the car slowly taking in every detail. "It's like you just got it yesterday." I smile, still looking around. I see him staring at me with amusement in his eyes. "I'm sorry, it's just amazing." I look forward and buckle my seatbelt slowly.
"It's okay, just surprised how much you know about cars." He puts the key into the ignition, and reeves the engine, shifting it into reverse. He quickly pulls out of the parking lot, shifts into first gear and takes off. I watch the road carefully realizing I'm nowhere near my own house.
"Wait. Where are we going? Oh! I haven't told you my address yet," I practically squeal.
"I wanted to take you to my house. If you don't mind." He says quietly.
"Oh," I blush slightly, "I guess that's fine. I'll just text my mom, to let her know where I am and everything." I start to dig through my bag looking for my phone. Once I find it I send my mom a quick text telling her I will be home later got a ride from a friend and that I love her.
"Why do you even have to tell your mom, will she send the police after you if you're not in bed by nine?" he laughs slightly at his own joke.
"Very funny James, I just tell her so she doesn't think I'm out with some crazy person, like you," I mutter the last part under my breath. "Trying to kidnap me. And I don't have to be in bed till eleven, thank you very much." I say sounding a little aggravated.
"Aw, loosen up butter cup."
"Butter cup? What am I now, your pet or something?" I glare at him, even angrier than before.
"Sorry you're sensitive about the nickname I gave you. You want a new one?"
"Please," I say nicely.
"How about Nella?" he smiles slightly looking over at me. I sit there for a few seconds contemplating whether I like the name or not. I nod my head slightly hoping he sees it. I see him smirk out of the corner of my eye, knowing he's happy that I had said yes to his nickname for me.
"Well since I have a nickname now, you get one too."
"Oh no, I give nicknames not get them." He smiles slightly.
"Yep, not today, you are getting a nickname. Give me a moment," I look out the window, thinking hard about what his nickname should be, "I've got it! It's Jem, what do you think?" I smile bashfully.
"Hmm, I like it." He smiles, pulling into a drive that seems a mile long. My eyes follow it to a huge house, my mouth drops a little and my eyes widen. He chuckles slightly, "Like it?" I nod my head, finding myself speechless. He laughs again, putting the car into park.
"I'm sorry. It's just. Wow" I say still awe struck.
"It's alright, come on let's go inside." He quickly gets out of the car and walks to the passenger side of the car, opening the door slowly. I smile up at him and slowly climb out of the car. Once I'm out he gently shuts the door, and takes my hand in his. I look down at our interlocked fingers and smile, having no clue why I'm holding hands with a complete stranger, but I still keep my hand in his, feeling as if our hands belonged together. He slowly walks me up to his house, pushing the door open, and my hand still in his.
"How can a person who gets a million detentions, be sweet and kind to a girl like me?" I look at him, my eyes focusing on the small, minor details of his face. His curly blond hair gently lying against his forehead, his ice blue eyes stare back at my own.
"I'm not that bad, I put the trouble maker act around my friends, not sweet, beautiful girls like you." He smiles; raising his free hand to my cheek he slowly tucks a free strand of hair behind my ear.
"Oh," I blush slightly, lowering my head, "I'm not pretty, let alone beautiful."
"That would be a lie; you are the most beautiful girl in the entire school."
"Your compliments are greatly appreciated, but you're a senior. I'm a sophomore. You could have any girl in the school. Everyone adores you..."
He quickly jumps in, interrupting me, "Everyone? Does that everyone include you?" He smirks at me. "You're right about me being able to get anyone, but I don't want anyone. I want you Nella." At that I blush a deep red, as I slowly nod my head. He sees the slight nod of my head, and with that his smile grows wider. "Nella, you are simply amazing."
Later within the evening, not much past eight o'clock in the evening James and I are cuddling with each other, watching the third movie this night. The front door slams shut making me jump with fear. I see James bite his lip, as he untangles himself from me. "Stay here," he whispers into my ear planting a small kiss onto my forehead. I see him walk off to another room within his house. Soon after I hear two male voices yelling back and forth. I recognize James' voice the other I'm unable to figure whom it belongs to, most likely his father. After a while I hear glass smashing against something. I jump up off of the sofa.
