Chapter Seven
"for no one can fly unless the fairy dust has been blown on him"-Peter Pan
The next morning, Danny woke up and stretched. "Hey, Nana," the dog thumped her tail wildly against the bed. Danny scratched her behind the ears. "Lets' go see what the weather looks like, okay, girl?" She pushed open the hidden door and stepped out onto the balcony. The sun was shining brightly, and it was feeling very warm out. Nana barked, sniffing at the ground. Danny bent down to her level and looked at the ground.
"What is it, girl?" There seemed to be a sparkly substance littered along the floor. She picked it up and rubbed it between her fingers. It looked like the fake fairy dust that comes with Tinkerbell Halloween costumes, or the glitter you could get at the craft store. Nana barked again, louder this time. Danny whirled around, hissing, "Nana! Shh!" She looked at what the St. Bernard was sniffing. It was an envelope. Danny flipped it over. Her name was printed on it in large letters in an unfamiliar handwriting. Danny slid her finger under the flap, praying to God that she didn't massacre the envelope like she usually did. Inside the envelope was a single piece of paper. It said,
Danny,
I'm hoping that you know what this is. Use it well, but be careful. And think happy thoughts.
-A friend
Danny opened the envelope further, looking for whatever "this" was. Instead she found a Ziploc baggie full of more glittery dust. "What the.... What is this? Some new kind of drug?" Danny, thoroughly creeped out, stuck the Ziploc back in the envelope, and put the envelope on the side table. She'd figure out later what the cryptic note meant. She looked at Nana. "Breakfast?" The puppy wagged her tail eagerly. "I'll take that as a 'heck, yeah!'" They walked down the stairs.
Carlisle and Julie were sipping tea and coffee and chatting in the kitchen. They both looked up as Danny stumbled down the stairs.
"Hey, honey. How did you sleep?" Julie held out her arms, and Danny rushed forward, letting herself become enveloped in the scent of her mum's perfume and warmth. "Okay, I guess." Danny yawned, surprised to still be tired. Mum'll freak if I tell her I'm already getting notes left for me on the balcony, especially if they are filled with glittery dust. "What time is it?" She allowed herself to be given a big bear hug by Carlisle, who at 6'2 could squeeze her lovingly. "It's nine thirty, sweetheart. Your brothers have been up since seven. Danny blinked. "Seven? How is that even possible? With all the jet lag, they manage to get up at seven! How?" Julie ruffled her hair.
"You know you brothers are early birds. Seven is about normal for them, you know that." Danny shook her head. "I know, but still, seven!" She muttered as she walked back up the stairs to take a shower and get dressed. As she scrubbed, she thought about all the weird things that had happened to her lately. The door opening on its own, Tina and Peter's reaction to her, the mysterious voice that had saved her from the rain, the note with the glitter dust. It just wasn't adding up. Maybe Katie and Sophiewill know, Danny thought. They had been close friends with her when she had lived here before, and maybe they were playing a trick on her. Her parents could be in on it too...that can't be right. What about Peter and Tina? This makes no sense! Danny resolved to call them, and soon. Maybe they could explain Tina's crabbiness.
Danny walked into her bedroom, silently cursing herself for not bringing her things into the bathroom. Her teeth chattered. It's always cold in the mornings, but the frigidness was intensified after the hot shower. Danny pulled on a black plaid shirt, rolled up the sleeves, and slipped into a pair of dark blue short shorts. She brushed her teeth and tied her hair up into a French twist, supporting it with a few bobby pins. Mascara, foundation, and lip gloss, and she was all done.
