Chapter Eleven
"Live every moment as not to regret what you are about to do." -Mickey Mouse
Mr. Wills whistled to get the class's attention. "Listen up guys! The principal wants someone from this class to perform at lunch a few weeks from now. Whoever wants to needs to sign up on this list-"He held up a sheet of paper and taped it to the wall by his desk. "Auditions will be on Friday. Today is Monday. You have four days to practice. Good luck!"
Peter looked at Danny from his seat in the front of the room and winked. Danny managed a flirtatious smile. What was she doing? She should never have gone on so many dates with Peter. She was leading him on, and that wasn't fair.
Looking at his perfect jawline, Danny had to correct herself. She was confused. Peter was great. But another relationship? Not gonna happen.
People talked, and they were going to start linking their names together-more than they already were, anyway. She didn't need that. She shook her head quickly to clear it and concentrate on what Mr. Wills was saying. "Only one soloist can be chosen, but the runners-up, if you will, are going to be backup singers. On to other business, you know what you need to do."
He sat down at his computer, and the kids got to work. Danny was conflicted. Should she audition? It would be pretty nerve-wracking. But Mum said not to live life with regret. And, after over a month of school, she'd had to admit that her guitar skills had improved. And it would be nice to be known for something other than being the only girl that Peter Pan had ever pursued.
She glanced up to the front of the classroom, where a line was slowly forming as more and more people wrote their names down. Danny focused on her book exercises. Someone slid into the seat next to her. "You going to sign up?" Peter asked.
"I don't know."
"I am! You should." He pressed.
"Wouldn't that mean we were competing?" Danny asked, smiling.
Peter's grin widened. "Afraid of competition, Williams?"
"Of course nawt. I'm afraid of what it will do to you."
"Of what will do to me?"
"Losing." Danny smirked. Peter grinned.
"Now you've backed yourself into a corner. You have to try out now." Peter stood up. "I'm signing both of us up."
"Peter! Don't!" He pretended to ignore her. She wanted desperately to tackle him, but she knew that she couldn't.
He finished signing both of them up, and although she pretended to glare at him when he sat back down next to her, all she could really think about was how his arms felt wrapped around her.
"Anyone home?" Danny called out, dropping her keys and backpack on a chair that afternoon. "Hellooooo?" Nana came flying at her from the backyard. "Hi, baby!" Danny picked up the puppy and stuck her face in the soft fur. Nana wriggled and coated her face in puppy drool. Danny immediately put the puppy down.
"Ick, Nana!" she swiped her arm across her face. The puppy wagged her tail, the picture of innocence. "Yeah, you act like you're all innocent," Danny grumbled, texting Julie to let her know she got home okay. The house was eerily quiet, because the twins were at sports practice and Carlisle was at work. Where's Mum? I thought she said she was going to be home? Danny's phone rang "The Second Star to the Right," and she pounced on it eagerly. Oh. Just Mum.
