Chapter Fourteen
"Smee: 'Captain, the ice is melting, the sun is out, and the flowers are all in bloom...'
Captain Hook: 'He's back.'" Peter Pan (2003 movie)
The pirates' aim had not improved. In fact, it may have gotten worse. Peter yanked Danny further behind a cloud. "This is gonna be great!" his face was lit up and he looked exactly like he did in the movies. "Tink, stay with Danny. Danny, watch this." He shot out from behind the cloud, right to where the pirate ship had full view of him.
"Peter! What are you doing?!?" Danny yelled. "Peter!"
He laughed. "Watch! They can't catch me!" he swooped down towards the ship. "Hey! Hook! Try to catch me now! Has your aim improved?" A cannonball shot up towards him, but Peter dove up and it zoomed past. "Guess not!" Peter fell over in the air laughing, and Danny couldn't help herself. She zoomed out too.
"HEY! HOOK! THINK YOU CAN HIT A GIRL?" Two cannonballs, one after the other, raced towards her. She sidestepped the first one and preformed a backflip to dodge the second one. "OH, I GUESS NOT! TOO BAD!" They doubled over with laughter. A few more cannons shot out of the ship in protest. They sidestepped them easily.
"C'mon. Let me actually introduce you to the Lost Boys. Before Hook has a heart attack."
"There are actually Lost Boys?" Danny asked incredulously. Somehow, she was able to keep up with Peter, so there was no need for him to check his speed.
"Of course! Did you expect me to be immortal by myself?"
"Wait..." Danny slowed down as an idea occurred to her. "You don't mean Ted, and Prentiss, and Saul, and Paul, and all of them....are immortal Lost Boys?"
Peter shook his head. "They're Lost Boys, but they aren't immortal. It's a little confusing. I'll have them explain it better once we get to the hideout."
"Okay, I'll take your word for it. I just want to see the mermaids. I'd like to see them try to down me; I was on the swim team when I was little." Peter laughed and pulled her along. "Somehow, Hook still hasn't been able to figure out the exact location of the hideout, but don't worry, you'll always be able to find it."
"How will I always be able to find it, if it's hidden?" Danny asked, fighting to keep up with Peter as he ducked and wove through the trees.
"You'll see! As soon as we get there!" He grabbed her hand again and pulled her along, trees whizzing by so quickly it was dizzying. He stopped so suddenly her hand was ripped out of his grasp and she went flying through the air, tumbling head over heels and almost getting up close and personal with a tree.
"We're here."
"You could have warned me," she grumbled, flying back to where he was.
"Sorry. I forget it's your first time flying. But we're here." Danny blinked. "I don't see-" Her words trailed off as the hideout came into focus. All of a sudden, a large, three-story, super-tricked-out log cabin stuck out from the foliage. Vines wrapped around its exterior, curved around the porch, and just barely kept from suffocating the windows.
"How...what..." Danny spluttered. "Peter, its beautiful! How did Hook not find this?"
"He has not been meant to find it, and he never will. Funny, isn't it?" Peter started to fly towards the house, but stopped when he realized Danny wasn't following. "Something wrong?"
