“Joorddoonn? Joorrrdddoon? Wake up nee-chan. We have school today.” Jordon rolled over on her side, ignoring her sister. Hannah shrugged. “Alright have it your way.” Jordon sighed continuing to ignore her. A few seconds later, Jordon felt herself hit the carpeted floor her eyes snapped open.
“OW! What the heck was that for?”
Hannah smiled down on her. “No time for that; we have school today.”
“I don’t see that as an excuse to get up.”
“Well how about this: if you get up off the floor, I won’t chop your head off your shoulders.”
Jordon sighed. “Alright alright I’m up I’m up.”
Hannah smiled again throwing her sister a blue skirt, black leggings, and a white light jacket. Jordon groaned getting up off the floor and heading to the bathroom. After she had changed she came back out and brushed her teeth. Jordon stared at herself in the mirror. She was brown skinned and clad in the outfit her sister had handed her.
“There’s something missing.” Hannah noted from Jordon’s bed. Jordon nodded. Hannah smiled. “Oh I know. Come here.” Jordon walked over to her friend who reached into Jordon’s bow and pulled out the bow that her older brother Jonathon had given her. He had been the only one who loved her, so the bow always made her feel special. The bow was a navy blue color with yellow stars around it. Hannah clipped the bow on the left of her sister’s head. “Aannd—there. That’s a really nice bow Jordon-chan. Where’d you get it?”
Jordon smiled. “It was a gift from the only one who loved me: my big brother Jonathon. He treated me with respect and sang me to sleep every night. He and I weren’t separated in foster care thank goodness—well not the way you think. He-He didn’t me to go with my foster parents and when they tried to take me away (I was 5 and he was 14) he tried to go with me. When the cops came over, he fought them too.” Jordon shook her head. “They shot him. My big brother got shot—for trying to save me. He put his life on the line—for me.”
Hannah smiled. “Well it looks adorable on you.”
“Arigato gazimus oneesan.”
“You’re welcome nee-chan. Now let’s go down and get some breakfast.” Hannah lead the way out the dorm room and down to the hall. Jordon’s stomach growled and her mouth watered at the smell of bacon, waffles, and pancakes cooking. Jordon and Hannah were one of the last to arrive, so Jordon thought things would be moving rather quickly. She’d be able to sneak in, eat, and sneak out in no time. As soon as they stepped into the cafeteria, however, every eye turned on them and Jordon could hear several whispered voices.
“There’s the emo girl and her new sidekick.”
“I still can’t believe that dork got sympathy from her.”
“I remember when Hannah used to be a cool kid. Then her and Angie got into that fight and she changed.”
I know there are only about one or two hundred people at this school, but must they all stop and stare at us? Jordon thought to herself walking with her head down to the breakfast line. “Pick your head up and ignore them. They’re just jealous.”
“Jealous of what? Last time I checked I was an outcast and you were the hero that gave up your popularity for some reason.” Jordon hissed, picking up a tray.
Hannah smiled. “Well let’s just say I don’t befriend many people.” Jordon was about to protest when a growl came from her stomach. Hannah smiled down on her little sister. “Let’s get you something to eat before your stomach starts eating itself.” Hannah stepped up to the ordering counter and ordered two scoops of eggs, a bowl of cereal, bacon, and grits. Jordon ordered a scoop of eggs and a strip of bacon. Thankfully the food was free and nobody questioned them as they walked out and sat at the lone table beside the window.
