Meeting Jane

Chapter 3

I sprint out of the bathroom as Lisa chases me. I pass through hallways I eventually get to the exit. I reach the car and start the engine. I drive to my house. When I arrive there I try to hold myself from crying but when mom opens the front door my tears burst out .

"Oh dear, what had happened?" she asks, while hugging me into her chest. I just sink into my mother's warm chest; she takes me into the living room and offers me a cup of water. She waits several minutes until she asks.

"Is this about Cassie?"

"She's gone mom" I start to cry again, and the tears seem to never end.

"We will find her" she says in a soft voice.

_____________

The sunlight shines through my pale yellow curtains. My eyes open and start to slowly adjust to the bright sunlight. I don't remember going back to bed last night. Mother must've carried me after falling asleep. I get up and I find mom lying down on the floor with her jaw wide open. I quickly get up and sit next to her.

"Mom! Mom! Wake up please! Don't leave me now."

My eyes threaten to send tears out, but I know that this is not the time to cry. I must find out what happened last night.

"Dad? Are you home?" I call out from the hallway.

I hear someone rummaging through the drawers in my dad's study room. I slowly walk into the study room, and I gasp at the sight of Jane trying to unlock one of the drawers.

She looks so different; she's about my dad's height, her hair is long and wavy. Her pale face shows that she hasn't been in good health, but her green eyes light up her face. She changed from head to toe.

"Jane? Is that you?"

I focus on every move she makes and when she turns to look at me it's like she sees me every day.

"Hi Katherine it's good to see you."

"What are you doing here?"

"I'm trying to clean the mess you made."

I look at her in a confused way.

"I have no idea what you're talking about" I say. I look at her desperately seeking answers.

"I've got no time to explain. Now tell me do you know where the keys for this drawer are?"

"Yeah dad hides them under the mat you're standing on."

"Oh right" she smiles acting as if she knew it was there.

She hurriedly pulls the mat away and grabs the keys and unlocks the drawer.

"Aha here it is!" she says enthusiastically.

"What is it?"

"The silver watch"

"Wait. What? "I ask. I'm more confused than ever. She starts to walk to my room. She stands in front of mom's body.

"I'm sorry mom" she whispers.

"You killed her?!" I ask in shock.

"No I didn't kill her. Of course not"

"She looks dead to me."

"Yes but it's only for some time." She sits on the edge of the bed and gets deep into her thoughts. I sit beside her and decide to find answers.

"How did you get here? Did you rise from the dead?" I laugh nervously.

"Not exactly, I was watching you from the ghost world this whole time."

"What do you mean? Why did you decide to go to the ghost world in the first place?"

"I didn't decide to go to the ghost world dumb head! I was forced to go there just like Cassie."

"Will you please tell me the whole story?" I ask patiently.

She sighs then starts to explain.

"In the beginning my best friend, Lauren showed me the golden watch and it was the most beautiful watch I have ever seen. We used to take turns on wearing it. One day Lauren and I were walking to school and suddenly a large man came and stole the watch from Lauren's wrist and kidnapped me. Lauren was unconscious and no matter how much I screamed for help no one heard me. They took me to the ghost world they need at least 5 alive humans to sacrifice for one dead person. I was the last one needed so they just left Lauren on the floor. That is exactly what happened to you."

I start realizing that it wasn't jane that Lisa was talking about. I begin to wonder how many people are traped there.

"Wow déjà vu. I still don't understand how did you get here? Weren’t you stuck in there?" I say.

"There's no time to explain. It's time to bring Cassie and mom back." She gets up and begins her way to the front door.

"Where are we going?" I ask as I catch up with her.

"You are not going anywhere; I am going to clean this mess." She gives me a quick smile then pulls down the door handle and locks the door behind her.

"Jane No! Come back here!" I scream on top of my lungs.

I can't just wait here without knowing what's going on around me. I think of waiting for dad to come from his road trip, but he's not coming until afternoon. I have to get out of this house and follow Jane as fast as possible. I hurry to the window and try to open it but its jammed.

Jane is smarter than I thought. She's starting the car engine.

"Oh no! I have to hurry" I murmur to myself.

I carry one of the dining chairs and throw it on the window. It shatters and glass spreads everywhere. I carefully go out of the window. Since Jane took my car I have to use my bike. I hop on the bike and quickly cycle after Jane. She speeds up and tries to lose me by turning in many different directions. After several turns she gives up and stops the car. I jump out of the bike. I begin to talk but she interrupts.

"Just get in the car!" she says.

"Ok" I say as I heavily breathe in and out. I get into the car and I find a blonde girl sitting on the passenger seat. She looks at me and I calmly stare at her face.

"Hi!" she says as she waves her hand.

"Who are you?" I ask puzzled at her presence in my car.
