I kept on running. As fast as I could. The night was cold, but my body wasn't. My hands were shivering as I crossed Block 8. My Aunt was the only hope. It was so foolish of me to just run out with the expectation of a cab. Where was I going to find a cab at this time. For a moment, a thought of returning back to Lucy did come to my mind. Though it would be like spoiling their sleep. And why to involve someone else in something which is related to my family. I really didn't knew whether my decisions were right or wrong at that time, only thing I knew was Aunt Mary was my only way out.
After taking a left from Block 8, I stopped. It was pitch black ahead. The street light wasn't working may be. My town in Carolina wasn't a big one. So it was really wrong to expect people wondering of the streets at this time of the hour. I stood there on the street for a moment, inhaling and exhaling even harder. My heart beats were clearly roaring enough for me to hear. Barely 10 minutes though this straight road, I could reach my Aunt's apartment. If I had turned back to find another road, it was a waste of time. Without thinking much, I ran along the street, beating every flow of breeze which clashed on against me.
Many of us who are used to dark must have observed. The distant we stand from dark places the lesser is visible. And the closer we go, our eyes start to adapt it. I knew if I looked back for even a single moment, I was surely going to sense that fear. I just kept pushing forward.
And then, there was this loud noise. Is it music??
"Is that a party?" I muttered to myself.
A classic jeep was rampaging forward through the center of the road. I looked behind only to notice 4 teens of similar age to me were, I guess enjoying. As I observed more keenly, mostly all of them were high. I could see it from what all stuffs they were doing. I ignored them and walked my path. The bright shiny headlight did provide some light to see ahead.
To my surprise, the jeep halted besides me. I ignored it again. Excepting some goons, I ran towards the courtyard of a bungalow, next to me. The rain did make the ground slippery there. I was never good at running on normal tracks, what good was a slippery muddy ground going to do. I slipped and the slip was real hard. My lower left elbow hit the flower pot which were kept aside as my trouser got spoiled by the dirt.
A girl walked towards me. She leaned forward and gave her hand. The bright headlights of the jeep were good enough to block my vision. I wasn't able to see her properly. As she leaned a little more, I saw her face. How could I not see those glimmering dark blue eyes with that brittle smile.
"Are you going to get up or not?" She asked. Her soft voice flew past my ears. Never heard such a sweet tone before. She was too generous to be with these goons. I clutched her hand and stood up on my feet.
"Thanks" I acknowledged her with a cheesy smile. It was obvious of me to play on a safer side.
"Hi, I am Amelia" She introduced herself with a proper gesture.
