Chapter 5. Essence

Ava's POV.

"Faith Evans, sixteen years of age, blonde hair and blue eyes, average height and weight, a student from the University of Longbridge, has been missing for the past three days of this month. Her parents stated that they asked her to buy some groceries on the night of the sixteenth of November, at around seven in the evening. But, however, the young Evans did not come back later that night." I read aloud from the screen of my laptop. This article has been all over the internet and I only had the chance now, to actually get a view of it. Where could she be?

I continued, "Mr. and Mrs. Evans fear that their daughter could have gone lost, or was taken by someone we all not know. When the cashier of the store was asked if he saw the poor girl, he responded that he did notice Faith buying some eggs, and that he was also the one who checked her out of the grocery. Locals were asked too, yet they didn't notice anyone being kidnapped or any sign of trouble at that time. The police and investigators have been doing their best to find the missing girl, but as for now, we are still stuck with the question, "Where is Faith Evans?" If you have any information, please contact..."

My voice trails off as I finish, closing my laptop and lay back on my chair. Another missing person, I thought. This might go on the news tonight, I wonder what happened to her? Sighing, I stand up and walk towards my bedside table to check my phone if I had missed any calls or messsages. The bright light of the screen appeared, and a notification popped up, stating there were two unread texts.

Ava! I'm going out, mind joining me? Xx

As I was about to read the other message sent to me, my door suddenly opens and I saw my mother opening it widely with a plastered smile on her face.

"Dinner's ready, sweetheart." She spoke.

"Yeah, I'll be down in sec." I stated but she shakes her head, "You know your Dad doesn't like waiting, now c'mon love." She takes my hand gently, and I eventually lock my phone and place it back to where it was before.

At the dinner table, freshly cooked salmon and a side of vegetables were placed in front of us, and some kind of pasta that I forgot the name of. We ate in silence, me, my mother, and my father. It wasn't like this all the time, before, we would tell stories and share whatever comes up in our mind. Everything was fun then, and we would even cook altogether. That was a year ago. But obviously now, it was far from that.

They were oblivious. It was precise that thee's something wrong going on with their relationship as husband and wife, and yet they still pretend to be okay in front of me. One fact, I dislike people that are plastic. Why can't they just express whatever they want? Is it wrong to just be yourselves? What has society done to us? Absolute madness.

For the past year, they weren't the sweet and caring couple they once were. They don't go on their usual dates every friday night, they no longer go to the movies, and for Peete's sake, I hardly even see them kiss or hug. At first, I didn't mind it that much compared to now, since I thought it'll were off soon.

For the past nine months, I could hear them shouting at each other downstairs, while I was in my room. Their voices were roaring around the entire house and it was bothering me, so much. Everytime I asked, they'd shrug it off. Everytime I watch them secretly, they don't notice me frowning.

For the past six months, I did my best to hide my wrists with sweaters and jackets. I'm guessing you already know what I mean by that. Cut after cut, after cut, after cut, after cut. I don't even know how many times I've done it, but it sure has been a lot. No, I don't do it every single day. Just when I feel like I need to. And no, I'm not crazy. It's just the way it is.
