This is set back during the colossal titan attack. I always thought that Bertholdt and Reiner would have been stationed outside the walls at a young age (like twelve or so).

"R-Reiner? Can you hear me? I'm not so sure if we should do this," Bertholdt said in a nervous voice. Reiner looked down on the ground, his eyes showed grief and regret.
They were only children.
"It's alright Bert, no one's gonna know. We just need to finish what needs to be done," Reiner spoke, his voice almost broke down like he was about to cry.
Only children.
"Just smile Bert, smile like we're playing or pretending to be heroes," Reiner tried to reassure Bertholdt once more. Bertholdt only trembled and shook his head.
Smile for me.
Bertholdt tried to form a curve on his lips, but his knees felt numb, he broke down into tears. "Reiner! I don't want to do this!" Bertholdt continued to scream out in between tears. Reiner ran to him and tried to tell him that it was all going to be fine.
Please.
Bertholdt looked up at Reiner and saw Reiner smiling. The smile was soft and sincere. Bertholdt calmed down and Reiner stepped away. He gave him a nod.
Bertholdt smiled.
He bit his thumb.
