haemophilia (4)

It's been what feels like twenty minutes before they turn up. The ambulance drives straight into the park and stops a few meters away from us. Out comes a paramedic carrying a big first aid box and another two with a stretcher.

"Get on the phone to Mrs. Jones," one of the paramedics orders as they run over, "She'll be glad to know that we've found him... again."

"Hello, miss," another says to me as he couches down next to the boy, "We're sorry we took so long, with the stricks and all, you know. It's a good thing you stayed to help him. He may not have survived this time."

The paramedic with the first aid kit opens it up and takes out a small needle with a long tube connected to a bottle filled with some sort of medication, I presume. He takes the needle and puts it into the bend of his arm. I have to look away.

"What do you mean 'this time'?" I ask, worried.

"Well you see, little Micheal here has haemophilia."

"Hemo-what?"

"I'll let the doctor explain to you, that is presuming you'll be coming with him to the hospital. To see how he goes?"

"Can I?" I ask.

"Oh yeah! Mrs. Jones would love to meet you, to thank you for helping her little boy."

"Well, I'd be happy to-"

Micheal groans as he regains consciousness. He's okay. I let a sigh of releaf out of my mouth. I look at the boy, his eyes open completly to reveal the most stunning green eyes.

"Micheal? Micheal? It's me, Sam," he says, "Ralph, bring the stretcher over!"

"Sam? What happened?" Micheal asks as he's lifed up onto the stretcher.

"You decided to go for a bike ride despite what your mother told you and had an accident," Sam says, stern with arms crossed, "You know how dangerous this is. Luckly for you, this young lady was here to help you."

Micheal turns his gaze from Sam to me then smiles, "Thanks..." He pauses.

"Oh yes, I'm Taya."

"Thanks Taya! Has anybody ever told you you're very pretty? You can call me Mikey, only special people get to call me that," he beams.

"Thank you... Mikey, that's very sweet of you," I blush.  As per usual my hand autimaticaly flies up to my cheek.

"Haha, did you just try to wipe your blush off," he laughs loudly as they wheel him into the ambulance. I follow behind and take a seat next to the stretcher.

The ambulance pulls into the hospital's emergancy centre only ten minutes after we left. Waiting, with a face almost as pale as Micheal's, was a lady, presumably his mum. When she sees the ambulance drive in she runs to where the driver is and begins to ask thousands of questions. I can't make out what they are, though.

They came around to the back doors and opened them. The lady flung herself at Micheal, engulfing him in a huge hug, "Oh Mikey, I'm so glad you're okay. You need to listen to me next time okay. You could have gotten your self killed."

They come out of the hug and the lady turns to look at me, "Where you the one who called the ambulance?"

"Yes, I was. It was no big deal, anybody else would have done the same thing."

"Thank you, thank you, thank you! It if it wasn't for you he may have died. Thank you again..." She paused like Micheal did before, waiting for my name.

"Taya," I say.

"Taya, yes. Thank you so, so much, Taya. You do not understand how grateful I am. Come inside, it's cold out here. I'll explain what has been going on." She leads me into the hospital, whilst squeezing Micheal's hand, "Oh and you'll have to turn off your phone when you get inside."

"This is Dr. Riely," Mrs. Jones introduces.

"I'm Taya," I tell him.

He shake my hand, "Nice to meet you, Taya."

"This brave girl saved Micheal's life today," Mrs. Jones says, proudly.

"Oh, I wasn't that brave. I just did what anyone would have done."

"Well, whether you think you were barve or not we are all thankful that you were there. Micheal over there has haemophilia," Dr. Riley says pointing to Micheal who was hapilly munching away at a chocolate bar, "It's a rear condition, it only affects 1 in every 5,000 males. So little Mikey over there is a very special kid."

"What is it exactly?" I ask.

"It a diesease where the body is enable to create white blood cells fast enough to heel the wound or in some cases, like Michaels, don't form at all. So the person will have excessive bleeding," he continues.

"Oh my! So you mean... he could have ATUALLY died?"

"Yes, as sad as it is. Would you like to go see him?" Dr. Riely asks.

"If I can, I'd love to," I reply, happily. I hope he's okay now.

I walk into the room where he's staying. He's got chocolate all over his face and is playing a video game on one of the hospitals TVs. He looks up as I walk into the room, "Hey Taya!" he shouts.

"Hey Mikey, how are you feeling. Any better?"

"Yeah, much better now that you're here." I laugh as I sit down in the chair next to his bed, "Are you going to come visit me?" His face full of anticipation.

I sigh, "I can if you'd like me to. Just promise me you won't do anything silly, okay?"

"I promise," He says crossing his heart. I ruffle his dark brown hair a bit before I get up to leave, "Where are you going?"

"I'm going home, my mum'll get worried. It's already pretty late," I explain to him.

"But, but? Come see me tommorow, please?"

"Alright but remeber our promise." He nods. "I'll come straight after school."
